Insanely good, I loved being Ghost here and just being inside his mind all the time - all his inner dialogue just adds to the absolute charm this fic has, and the language, the scenes, the atmosphere, I'm nyamin' it all

I will definitely miss reading this for the first time in the next coming weeks ffs

What can I say except I fucking love birrdie's works, and this was phenomenal and I want more and that I felt absolute euphoria when I read 'wispy leather-swathed blonde' and pieced together that Grian hit Tango and that Jimmy was going to be in-between a blood feud and I just. . . I JUUUUUUUUUUSTTTTTTTTTT

Grian's characterisation here was also bonkers, it was incredibly good - the family dynamic is always on point too and the symbolism is off the charts as always!

Staring at him feels personal, like peering in on a memory he doesn’t know he had. He should know this moment, this feeling, this man. He should recognize that deep, bone-aching pull inside himself that leaves him cemented in that stool, that nags at him that maybe, after all this time, he’s finally ended up in a specific place for a specific reason. There’s plenty of things he’s been waiting for— a sign, a reason, a why— but this?

Bdubs licks his lips. “Do I know you?”

A private smile. Even through the mask, Bdubs can see it. “Not yet.”

    “But I will?"

Or; Bdubs jumps through time. Etho outlasts it.

And like clockwork, birrdie's style has made me fall in love with this fic just like it did with aasb

Seriously though, the concept of an immortal being and a time traveller is so peak BUT THE FACT BDUBS CAN'T CHOOSE WHAT ERA HE TRAVELS TO NEXT, LEAVING ETHO WAITING FOR YEARS TILL HE COMES BACK, to where he inevitably travels to wherever he is (he even saved him as per his deal with the Watchers, he saved Etho bruh, nah, man, you are fucking joking)

Kudos to birrdie! I love this fic so much, it now holds a tender place in my heart ;(

    Summary

Grian presumed his soul was actively leaving his body – providing him with just another last minute delusion to take him into the next life - until he heard music.

His tired delusions were a lot of things, but they were never music.

Grian blinked, once, twice, then a third time. Still, the shape on the horizon didn’t fade. The light didn’t fade. The music didn’t fade. This wasn’t the blurry shadow of what may or may not be a rock, or the light of the moon against a wave imitating a town. This was a genuine miracle. This was his relief.

    It was a ship!

After being cursed by a witch, Grian finds himself stuck in the form of a parrot with no way to change back, and only a conveniently handsome pirate captain to rely on until he reaches land.

Amazing, I literally can't get enough of Calam's characterisation of Scar and Grian, it's on point everytime (Scar's so easy to love) and I loved the dreamwalking aspect in this, oh my god - I sincerely cherished every bit of this AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

(Wish Grian had the chance to clap back at that sea witch though)

The insurmountable sound of the roof caving in, the support beams failing, and the marble decorations shattering around him seemed to stop all at once. There was nothing but silence. Cold, abrupt, threatening silence.

As quickly as it had begun, the disaster simply ceased.

“Woah,” an unknown voice chimed, echoing through the rubble. A man smiled down at him, his expression bordering somewhere between surprised and amused. “You’ve caused quite a bit of chaos here, haven’t you?”

    Bookmarker's Notes

I am not at all good with vocalizing how I feel so I will just say that this fic is absolutely a-may-zing and I had a devastatingly good time reading it in like a day because it was just SO, so, so immersive. The author is SO articulate, just Grian's thought processes and ruminations had me wanting more and they take like a solid half or more than a half of the total word count.

It was more than just a mystery thriller, it was tear-jerking and it was powerful - I did not expect the story to be as intricate as it was - it was like grief and love and hate painted with words.

My heart legit aches after reading this because I can't even let this go even though the whole premise IS a very defeated, mentally-suppressed Grian finally letting go; burning Scar's 'empty' letter, going to the pub and drinking tea again and even going to France. That blumming song as well, 'Les Feuilles Mortes', will inevitably come back in my life in passing and I will just start sobbing, like no way bro.

Being a reader of a very thoughtful and psychological book is such exposure, being part of a detective story means you are also trying to work things out along with the protagonist but really this time, it was navigating through emotions; a lost love. This fic has literally changed me, the FACT they both sort of vitalised each other IN A WAY? Scar giving him a high that Grian's detective work usually gave him back when he was in Germany or just to bury his still-aching love for Scar, thinking he's only set this game to taunt Grian for it and Scar's version of his own game ultimately set out to profuse a sick but genuine love for Grian. DUDE. In a way, the back and forth was really just the meaning behind the metaphor of their dance in Scar's café; Grian slipping at times and stepping on Scar's toes at first was him losing to Scar, having loved ones be killed but when he REALLY got into it, when he really started putting the emotion into it like Scar had told him 3 years ago, confronting the burning love he once had for him, only then did Scar truly fall. The author is a genius. How can I set this as the standard for my own writing because it is SO HIGH, I'LL NEVER BE ABLE TO ACHIEVE IT. I have never seen a one-sided attraction/obsession so clearer and more nuanced in my life. I want this forever ingrained in my brain.

Also Grian literally got his favourite memory of Scar singing/humming come true with Scar singing to him again towards the end when he was dying, CAN YOU IMAGINE. And Scar's backstory was so rotten, getting to know him through his lens/perspective was so beautifully executed, it wasn't like any other exploration of a (fictional) serial killer's mind I'd ever seen before. All the symbolism as well, had me gushing my heart out; the leather boots, Grian's bike, coffee, green envelopes, Grian's scar, hearts/heartbeats or pulses, and of course the Watcher's eyes. All rounded up to be just a really satisfying (not to mention it is SO intense, stakes were HIGH) and heart-wrenching, tragic but soft fic that left me as a shell of my former shell before reading it (in a good way) and I'd recommend it in a heartbeat (hah) so thank you so much author for making this.

And an ode to this quote; 'I loved you enough to forget the monster that I was. And for that I am truly sorry.' Beautiful, just beautiful mate! (Also R.I.P Mumbo, I at least took a break reading once I learnt that he was dead, Christ that made me livid)

There's also a song that I kept on loop while reading and it fits the story so well in my opinion; 'Moth Touch' by Maple Bee (I can't listen to it now or my heart will explode)

Hermit’s Hollow was a quiet town where you learned to ignore whisperings of nonsense and the dull, persistent feeling of being watched before you learned to ride a bike. To call it pedestrian would be a great disservice to all the terrible oddities occupying it— folks and legends alike.

Not that Grian believed any of them, of course.

Or; There's something wrong in Hermit's Hollow. There's something wrong with Grian. Neither of these are a surprise to him.

    Bookmarker's Notes

Why the actual HELL did I leave this masterpiece so late I should just punch myself

I literally want to cry at how well made this fucking story is - HOLY fucking shit - this deserves a theatre release. Ten out of ten, I will never write superstitions and ghosts, especially the Weeping Woman, in a way unlike this ever again. I was also honestly surprised at how everyone turned out fine at the end but my idealistic self loves it every second so birrdie made a really good choice there and I hope the skyblings live out their happiest days along with Scar. Yeah he's just there and rightfully so, he's mega interesting here, the way he scourges and plucks at information right from Grian's winged shape palms so easily, just from looking into his eyes as well, like they were made for each other, those two short and sweet kisses they shared was my everything

So in short, my writing WILL be taking inspiration from this underrated gem, I WILL struggle to do so and I WILL be rereading this again and again and again and again and again

    Do not enter Void people!

The man hovering over him leaned back, releasing Grian completely. Cold night air rushed in to fill the void.

“I guess it’s out in the open now,” the stranger hummed. “Shame. I wanted to avoid this.”

With the additional glow occupying the space between them, Grian was finally able to catch features that were lost in the prior darkness. His curiosity outweighed all else, and he drank them in greedily. As soon as he saw who sat across from him, alarms blared in his mind.

    This man wasn’t a civilian, wasn’t even a hero.

“Hello, Doctor,” the villain mused. “You were quite the help today.”

The kiss is feather-light and lingering, and Tango’s throat tightens around everything he thinks.
