"As Adam drove back to the Barns that night, he was thinking that he must have been wrong about being exhausted when he woke up. He was now a million miles past simply exhausted. At the factory, his head started aching, and by the time he was leaving Boyds it was pounding in time with his heartbeat. At some point between bending over the hood of some car or another, his sinuses started feeling swollen and he found himself in the impossible juxtaposition of simultaneously not being able to breathe through his congestion and wiping his running nose on the sleeve of his coveralls every few minutes. On top of that, he hadn’t really eaten anything besides the apple he brought for breakfast and a few bites of his granola bar for lunch, his stomach twisting whenever he thought about eating anything more.
As much as he wanted to deny it, Adam was sick."

Summary
Adam is doing okay. He really, really is. His Ivy League life is going just as expected, full of new opportunities and beginnings. Plus, he's done feeling sorry for himself. The past is the past, and he can't do anything about it, even if he desperately wants - and has tried - to. As Adam accepts Blue's offer to spend Christmas at Fox Way, he promises himself it won't be like last time.
More specifically, he won't let Ronan break his heart again.

Adam couldn't remember the last time someone else had patched his injuries. When he was younger, his mother used to do it sometimes, but there would be a disappointment in her eyes, and Adam never understood what he had done wrong.
Adam searched Ronan's eyes for any signs of disappointment, but there was only sadness and worry. Adam hadn't seen this look directed to him from Ronan.(Slight canon divergence where Ronan starts patching up Adam's injuries and bruises)
