Summary
Zoro may have been his first mate, his sword, but Sanji was his shield, and as such, he stayed steady as harbor stones, steady like a man who did not ask questions when a hand reached for him in the dark.
He let his captain lean on him. Not because Luffy needed it, maybe. But somewhere beneath all that wild grin and that storm-wreck laugh was a boy who had once been very, very alone.
Sanji finally looked down at him fully, one brow raised. “What part of me being here makes you think I’m not doing exactly what I want?”
Luffy blinked at him, like that hadn’t occurred to him yet. “Dunno,” he admitted. “Sometimes I don’t know what people want.”
‘Please,” Sanji thought, ‘You may not always know what people want, but you always know what people need.’
Sanji could’ve laughed at the honesty if it didn’t sound so damn fragile coming from him. “Yeah, well… for someone who doesn’t know what people want, you’ve sure got a whole damn crew who’d follow you straight into hell barefoot.”
He’d know. He was one of them.Luffy grinned, teeth flashing faintly in the low light. “You all love me.”
Sanji huffed again, shaking his head slightly. “Idiot.”

“Oi,” Sanji said softly, his hand slipping up to gently card through Luffy’s messy hair like it was the most natural thing in the world. “Get some sleep.”
“I’m sleepin’ right now,” Luffy muttered, eyes already halfway closed.
“You’re not. You’re annoying me.”
“Then why’re you still here?”
Sanji didn’t answer right away. Just watched him, soft and steady. His hand slipped down, cupping the back of Luffy’s neck, thumb brushing the edge of his jaw in lazy, absent comfort.
“Because I want to be.”
Luffy smiled, tired and real, like he believed it now.
“Good,” he whispered, thumb still brushing Sanji’s wrist, their hands still linked.
And that was enough.

He envisions magical seas, but he also dreams up another version of himself. Himself as the kind of prince he wished he had been. Strong and dashing and really, really good at cooking. Everyone liked him, especially princesses, and he lived in a rose colored castle at sea, filled with people who were always happy to see him because he could always make them happy.
Sanji’s entire body hurts and Luffy’s poor hands grasped in his must be worn down to the bone, but he lets himself drift off, afloat on Luffy’s rambling dreams.
