Summary
The love was there. It wasn't enough to save Jonathan Sims and Martin Blackwood, or revert their world, or prevent their tragedy. Nonetheless, it was there, and it has a much further-reaching influence than one might expect.
(Basically, Jonmartin and the Fears do not make the journey between somewheres in one piece, but those many pieces get a whole lot of mileage and make all the difference).

Summary
Letters-in-a-bottle are romantic, but impractical. They rarely find someone to read them, much less the intended recipient. Especially when there's no recipient in mind. Sometimes, though, people manage to start up a correspondence in the strangest of circumstances.

Martin is a fisherman. Jon is a fish. It's a forbidden romance for the ages.

Summary
“...Sure,” Martin replied glumly. He wondered if this is how all those french people felt, back in the days of guillotines. “Huh— How do you think I should introduce myself to this Archivist, anyway? They are going to be my boss, technically speaking, so I suppose I can at least try to make a good first impression…?”
The look Tim and Sasha shared was… Certainly something.
“I don’t think introductions will really be required,” she said, delicately.
“Right. Ok. Sure. Do you know what their name is? I ought to at least know that, right?” Martin pressed on, voice tinted by desperation. “Mr. Bouchard wouldn’t say—”
Again with the look. Martin was going to scream.
“Don’t you worry about that, bud,” Tim said with a very forced, nervous little grin. “The Archivist is just The Archivist. Just get in there and… Godspeed?”
----
Moved by desperation, Martin accepts a job he's perfectly aware is bad news, but maybe... It won't be as such for long.

Summary
Jon doesn’t do roller coasters.
It’s not because Jon doesn’t like roller coasters. It’s probably more accurate to say that roller coasters don’t like him. Specifically, his sense of equilibrium and his digestive system.
The fact that he is currently standing in the queue for a particularly large and particularly frightening-looking roller coaster is not, therefore, due to his overwhelming love for them. It is instead entirely due to his overwhelming love for the man standing next to him, eyes bright and excited.

Summary
Tim is sitting at his desk. Jon is still not used to the new patterning of scars that pepper the sides of his face and his neck, but it is not the scars that stop Jon dead in his tracks.
It’s the jumper Tim’s wearing.
Danny’s jumper.
Jon’s old jumper. The one Danny used to steal every time he came over until Jon finally told him he should just keep it, as it was clear Jon was never going to get to wear it again.
The one he had once let slip that he liked seeing Danny in because it was the same color as his eyes, and Danny had laughed and taken his hand and pulled him into a tight hug as he stuttered around the sentence, cheeks burning.
The one Danny had been wearing the first time they kissed, curled up on the ratty futon in Jon’s student flat.
The one he carefully hadn’t worn when they sat on a park bench, fingers loosely linked together, and decided gently, sadly, that this wasn’t going to work.
--
For Tim, his brother's old jumper is a comfort, something he's sorely in need of after Prentiss's attack. When he wears it to the Archives one day, Jon has an unexpectedly emotional reaction.

Summary
Tim doesn't look up to see who has come in, too far gone to even try to pull himself together for whoever has had the misfortune to stumble in on his grief. He hopes they'll just go away and tactfully never speak of it again; barring that, he hopes they at least don't ask if he's all right, when he is clearly as not all right as it's possible to be in a workplace washroom.
The person in the doorway doesn't leave, and they don't ask any inane questions. Instead, after a brief, painful pause, Jonathan Sims says,
"The tile in here is truly atrocious."
Research-era Jon stumbles in on Tim having a breakdown in the bathroom. He tries to help.

Martin sighs, brushing his palm over Jon's shoulder blade in slow, circular motions. Moments like these, when Jon comes to him for comfort and affection, unlock something special deep in his chest. Jon loves him, Jon trusts him, Jon wants him close by when he doesn't feel well. What a privilege that is.

Summary
Jon wouldn’t say he’s happy, what with Martin being so upset, but his concern is underpinned by how strangely good it feels to be able to have hard days in the normal way; to lament bad weather and wet socks; to have problems that are nothing a lazy night in and good company won't fix. They fought so hard, to have days like this.
or: Martin has a day as mundane as it is long. Jon rises to the occasion.

Summary
If Jon gets the joke at all, his expression doesn’t show it — a combination of the lighting, the mask, and the way at which Jon often stares at him like he’s got lobsters crawling out of his ears — instead leaning back and crossing his arms over his chest. “How much longer do we have?”
Martin looks at his wrist. He’s not wearing a watch. He usually doesn’t wear a watch, so he’s not sure why his first instinct is to look at his wrist, but none have manifested there when he checks, just to make sure. “Um,” he says helpfully. “Under seven minutes.” A medical examiner would refer to such as a slow death.Martin and Jon play a party game.

Once he finishes moving his mum into her new care home on the Essex seaside, Martin doesn't know what he's going to do with himself. Who is he, if not a caretaker? Just a guy with two jobs, one empty flat, and zero friends.
He doesn't expect to find meaning in the shallows of the North Sea.
He also doesn't expect to meet a mermaid, but hey. Life is nothing if not unpredictable.

The agony of having a crush: Jon is one specific person, but really, he could be anyone.
Or, he could have been anyone, until the day he walks into the cafe carrying a porcelain clown doll, because Martin is dead certain that that is not something anyone else has ever, will ever, could ever do.

Summary
Martin has long been fed up with his family who's still trying to pair him off with a woman. When his cousin's wedding is coming up, Tim has the solution for him: he's going to pretend to be Martin's boyfriend. A foolproof plan, if it weren't for their feelings getting in the way. Feelings for each other—and for Jon.
Meanwhile, Jon is having some kind of emotion about this whole fake dating thing, but it isn’t jealousy. Certainly not. He couldn’t even tell you who he’s jealous of.

“It’s okay. You can talk to me.”
Martin huffed at that. “Look who’s talking.” Jon would be nothing if not a hypocrite. “Yeah, theoretically? I can, but…maybe I shouldn’t. It might be better off to box this up and leave it in the closet. Let it collect dust.”
“You and I both know that’s not what you want right now.” Jon said quietly, carefully ignoring the jab towards him as he felt muscles ease beneath his fingertips.
Or: Jon and Martin have a long overdue conversation five days after the events of MAG 159.

Summary
Jon squints up at the block of apartments. The sky behind it is dark grey, threatening rain. Some of the windows are lit, and some of them aren’t. Tim lives in Flat 15, according to his employee records, so pretty high up.
-
There’s a cat staring out of a ground-floor window. Looking straight at him. It looks just like the Admiral, ginger and fluffy. It meows, silent, and puts one of it’s paws up onto the glass.
Jon smiles at it, thin and thready. “Hello,” he says, though there’s no way the cat can hear him over the storm.
-
“Seatbelt,” Basira says. Jon reaches up, pulls the belt across his chest, clicks it into place. Safe and sound. Basira turns the key, and the headlights light up. It’s raining, a low patter against the roof of the car as they pull away.
-
Jon’s not sure what the proper procedure is, when waiting for your coworker to blind herself. Outside, beyond the reinforced glass doors, rain hammers into the pavement.
-Jon tightens his grip on Martin’s hand. It’s soft, a little damp, the fingers slightly curled inward. “Not much further,” he says.
-----
Five unrecorded moments. It's always raining somewhere.
