Summary
When Akira Kurusu first arrived at his doorstep, Sojiro had hated himself for being reminded of Futaba. How they carried themselves in the same way, had the same pain of rejection and neglect in their gaze- but he ignored it. He'd insisted the kid was a criminal- a no good.
He ignored it all, it was his fault that the kid suffered for so many months when he first came to him. Sojiro couldn't undo his past mistakes, but he'd done his best to support Akira ever since, to slowly build the kid back up.
Holding the adoption papers in his hand, Sojiro knew this wouldn't fix everything either, but it would be a step in a more hopeful direction- if Akira would accept them, that is.

At first, Sojiro wondered if maybe the kid had butt-dialed him - he couldn’t hear anything. But then he heard a ragged breath, and Sojiro felt his whole body tense with some deep uneasiness.
“H-hey, Boss.”
Oh. Oh he didn’t like the sound of the kid’s voice. Not one bit. Something was wrong.
“I… I wish you’d answered. I wish… wish someone had answered…”
Sojiro froze in place, feeling like his lungs and heart had ceased functioning as the kid’s words washed over him. The sound of his voice, panicked, whispering, hurting.
Oh god, no. No no no, kid, no.
He knew. Somehow, Sojiro knew with absolutely certainty what this was, and he didn’t need to hear another word. He would listen to the full message later, but right now he needed to call Akira back. He needed to call back five fucking minutes ago. His hands were already shaking as he pressed the necessary buttons to send out the call, holding his breath as he held the phone to his ear.
Please. Please, answer me, kid. Please, let me be wrong.

As the door shut behind him, Akira stood in the middle of the room, dripping water onto the floor. He wasn’t wearing any glasses.
“Kid?”
Akira looked at him, but his eyes were glassed over, as though he was in a hell only he could see. He still hadn’t moved from his spot in the middle of the room.
One thing Sojiro had learned about Akira is that he is never, ever still.

When Sojiro had agreed to house a teenager with an assault charge, he’d expected to have to take on a strict disciplinarian role. He’d prepared himself for a delinquent, someone argumentative and violent.
Akira Kurusu is definitely not what Sojiro expects. The kid’s a lanky twig, with oversized glasses and a mop of messy curls. A child who seems to shrink away whenever Sojiro so much as breaths in his direction.
But what Sojiro doesn't expect the most, is for the delinquent teenager to slowly but surely become his own.
