Mel can’t quite shake the feeling that she’s lied. Not in the facts of the matter, not in any provable way, but by omission. She knows, logically, that what she's left out of her story is no different than Trinity being gay or Cassie being straight. Just another part of herself. But while her friends have accepted everything else about her freely and without reservation, she worries that this will be the bridge too far.

“Chad came up again, so we started talking about relationships and Mel got roped into it. I think she wanted to get us off her back but when Santos doubled down, I guess she felt like she had to save face..?”

The familiar jingle of his keys. That sound that used to mean he was coming to save her, coming to bring her take-out and reckonings and really late library books he’d stolen off her shelves. That all she had to do was wait. Scully tried not to be too hungry. She tried not to want anything at all.
Mulder said, “Then get your shoes on, Lady Macbeth.” Mulder gave in to poetry. Mulder said, “For I intend a zealous pilgrimage to thee.”

It sucked to acknowledge what he'd done to anyone, obviously, but for some reason it always felt the worst in front of Mel, because she'd never once shown him even a hint of judgment for it. He could list every shitty fucking thing he did, all the drugs he stole, the lies he told, all of it, and Mel would just sit there and nod and tell him Okay, well, thank you for being honest with me.
It wasn't that he didn't want her to do that. It was that he craved it so badly he couldn't stand it, needed her acceptance with an intensity he didn't know how to handle.

Frank won't agree to rehab. But while taking what he thinks is his last stroll around the Pitt, he runs into Mel.

Mel’s energy is quiet, and that unnerves him, reminding Frank of the way she’d turned inward earlier that day after the little girl who’d drowned. Someone should talk to her, he thinks. Someone who still has a job here. Someone who won’t be gone by tomorrow. Someone better.
But it also bothers him to imagine anyone else having that conversation with Mel. Frank would finally find someone willing to learn from him and then completely ruin his life less than twenty-four hours later. It’s almost poetic, in an ironic sort of way. Maybe it’s the universe intervening on Mel’s behalf to keep him away from her. Frank could imagine a higher power taking one look at the two of them and shaking its head: you don’t get to fuck this one up. Alarmingly, the voice he imagines sounds a lot like Robby.
