In the aftermath of the Battle of Five Armies, Thorin recovers from his fatal wounds in Mirkwood against his will. When Bilbo chooses to return to his life in the Shire instead of staying with him, a heartbroken and guilt-ridden Thorin is left on his own to contend with the mess he made while dragon-sick and the grudges being held against him - most notably that of the Elvenking, his former friend and now mortal enemy, who he was once deeply in love with. “Can you imagine what it would’ve been like?” asks Merlin. “If you weren’t a king, and I wasn’t—“ he gesticulates, trailing off.
“An all-powerful warlock? A dragonlord?” Arthur supplies gleefully. “An immortal deity worshipped by the Druids?”
Merlin cracks an eye open to glare pointedly at him.
Arthur hides his smile, albeit not entirely successfully. “We’d run, wouldn’t we,” he sighs, shifting to get into a more comfortable position. “Me with my farm,” he murmurs, suddenly finding himself rather melancholy. “You, with your house upon the lake.”
Merlin snorts a quiet laugh. “I doubt you’d know the first thing about tending to a farm.”
“Perhaps not,” Arthur agrees. He looks up to where Merlin is leaning back against the tree, his eyes closed once more in contentment. “Perhaps you’d be able to show me.”
Merlin and Arthur share a quiet afternoon away from the castle.

Summary

Gwaine peered at him, frowning. “Surely you know who that is, at least?”
“I- no, I… we didn’t get much news of the southern kingdoms,” said Arthur hastily, heart hammering. “Who… is the Mad King?”
Gwaine sighed. “Only the worst tyrant that the five kingdoms have ever known,” he said, turning the point of his knife in a circle against the table. “And probably one of the cruelest and most bloodthirsty monarchs that these lands have ever seen. That would be Arthur Pendragon, King of Camelot… bringer of doom and misery for us all.”

One day, Arthur wakes up to a world that's not his own. His friends are turned enemies, his Queen-to-be is a stranger to him, and Camelot is overrun with fear and tyranny supposedly dealt by his own hand. With no memory of what happened, Arthur is left to piece his life back together alone - because, worst of all, Merlin has vanished without a trace, as if he never existed in the first place.
