But then there’d be the screams, and the blazingly fast flash of light. The deep booms that never quite became background noise. Soot on her fingertips, ash on her tongue. There’s no way out of the guilt then, not even lies.

That’s when he saw her, stumbling out of a bush cradling her right arm against her chest and stumbling forwards. Her orange hair was striking against the green and brown shrubbery, and she shone like the sun despite the messy and hurt state she was in.
“Oh my god.” Martyn ran even faster towards her, a smile on his face. “She’s- Cleo! Are you okay?”

Martyn wakes up after Apo saves him, and realises he has no idea what happened to Cleo.
Cleo’s life is changed forever, and things will never be the same again.

Apo doesn’t want any part in this. It doesn’t matter how blindingly perfect Pearl’s blood tastes, she’s still a human—a living, breathing, thinking person that might change her mind or get too weak from constant feeding to keep up with two different vampires’ demands. And then what? How far will they take this? How long before Cleo's devotion turns ugly? How long before Apo surrenders to their instincts and becomes the very monster they're afraid of?
“Oh, don't be like that,” Cleo says, making their disappointed face. Apo’s really growing to loathe that expression. “You would've gone mad if you kept starving yourself and you know it. Pearl’s done you a favor; are you going to thank her?”

Everything is cold.
That was the first thing Apo had noticed since she had been turned.
Her hands, the clothes on her back, the wooden boards beneath her body; it was all freezing.
It made sense logically, they supposed; vampires don’t have a pulse, they don’t need one. No circulation runs through their veins, heart gone stagnant, blood nothing but waste as long as it’s inside a body, and that went for a vampire themselves.
And Apo hated every second of it.

Mira’s thumb stilled on the screen. She looked up, slow. “…What?”
Zoey’s hands twisted in her lap. “Like—not open relationships. Just… not just one person. Have you ever thought about being with more than one person and it still being okay?”
She wasn’t looking at Mira. Her voice was tight, like it hurt to speak. Mira watched her with a furrowed brow, still quiet.
“I feel so guilty all the time. Because I love you, Mira. I love you, and this doesn’t change that, but I see her and I want to make her smile and I want her to hold my hand and I think she’s beautiful and weird and sweet and I—”
She finally looked up, tears shining in her eyes.
“I think I ruined us. And I’m so sorry.”
Mira just stared at her. Wide-eyed. Silent.
Zoey’s heart dropped. “Say something.”
Mira exhaled like she’d been holding her breath for a month.
Then she visibly deflated—shoulders dropping, head tilting back against the wall—and let out a quiet, choked laugh.
“…Oh thank god.”
