Summary
Now that Dennis has somewhat found a place to call home, he spends what little money he has on protective patches. Trinity has never said anything about it, but he’s noticed that she also pays for their groceries, along with the rent, without complaint, so he’s grateful.
Truly, these patches have made his life significantly easier.
And yet, they’re also the bane of his existence.

Summary
Robby turns away from the room himself, stepping half back into the hall and the darkened corridor allows the rest of the logical argument against this decision to come flashing through his head: He is a student. You are his superior. He is half your age. You do not care enough about that. If his crush on you doesn’t undo you both, your attraction to him will. He tries to filter through the thoughts, fight them back with the only rational justification he has: He needs help and I can help him. The right thing to do is help him. I need to do the right thing just once tonight.

Or: The one where Robby finds Whitaker on the eighth floor instead of Santos. He takes him home just the same.

Summary
Dr. Robby and Whitaker try to ease each other's worries, and they do, but not in the way either of them expected.
*****
It was a hard decision to make, but Robby decided he didn't want to risk his new intern, who he definitely needed at work tomorrow, catching pneumonia.
He zipped up his hoodie, mildly annoyed at himself for not just ignoring it when he had the chance.
“Whitaker, listen. I don't want you calling in sick tomorrow, so…” Robby took a few steps back and scratched his head. “Why don't we get you someplace warm, and you can ask me whatever you want there? I don't live far from here.”

Summary
Maybe he wanted to prove a point. Prove Robby was not some kind of infallible paragon. Prove he deserved this, that he deserved to be whispered about.
Still, it wasn’t planned. Dennis couldn’t afford to be a jealous type- he knew, deep down, he couldn’t compete with them, the litany of girls and women that Robby politely declined on a daily basis, even the ones he eyed a touch too long. It was a strange dichotomy, in a way, believing himself undeserving of Robby, of all people, and considering himself the only one worthy of him.

Summary
There’s a hand, fingers cold, on his elbow – someone trying to get his attention. Usually, usually, his staff would know that just calling his name is enough, that he’s fine-tuned to the sound of it like a dog waiting for a command. But as he looks down and then to the person the chilled digits belong to, he finds Whitaker staring up at him owlishly. A shudder goes through him, senses zeroing in on the point of contact.
“Can I help you?” It comes out bitchier than he intended, caught off-guard as he is. But he doesn’t take it back, not even when the kid bites at his lower lip as if he wants to apologize.
“I just wanted to ask if you liked the chicken parm.”
aka Robby doesn't know he's being wooed by home-cooked meals and big, honest eyes.

Summary
If anyone asked, Robby could easily tell the story with a lovesick smile and eyes focused only on the younger man as if he hung the moon and stars himself. A rough hand caressing his arm before intertwining their fingers.
“It was almost like fate.” He would say, awe in his tone, still surprised at how this man chose to be with him.
If anyone asked Dennis, he would look at you with furrowed eyebrows and a slowly reddening face as he’d reply, “What do you mean? Dr. Robby and I aren’t dating.”

Summary
“Where does it hurt?”
“What?”
“The pain. I’m not playing this fucking game with you anymore. Where is the pain?” He waited, stared, until finally Dennis’s eyes came up from the floor and locked in on his own. “You’re one of the most driven people I’ve had the pleasure of working with in a long time, Whitaker, and you are off your game in a big way. I’ve seen you sit down more times in the past eight hours than I’ve seen you sit ever. You’re barely eating, you’re dragging ass, and -please excuse how direct I’m being when I say this- you’ve been downright bitchy the past three days.” Dennis’s face fell, and he tilted his head back down, eyes locking in and beginning to count the speckles in the tile floor, until long, deft fingers met his chin and tilted his face back upward, forcing him back into the eye contact that would be his undoing. “Tell me where it hurts.”

“The food? It’s from Doctor Robby,” Dennis says without thinking. “Oh, wait. I meant- the food’s from Chau’s. We- I got it on the walk home.”
Her eyes narrow.
“Was there a team dinner or something?”
“No,” Dennis mumbles. “It was just us.”
Robby and Whitaker fall into the habit of walking home together after work.

Summary
He finds himself, eventually, tangled up with his old attending from his rotation in the emergency department: Dr. Robby. He'll admit to having a crush on the man that was more than old enough to be his father. He was tall, handsome, a tad cruel and condescending. He’s kind and caring with his patients and it makes Dennis' gay little heart flutter. He has a scruffy beard, to die for amber eyes, and the kind of smile that'll sweep anyone off of their feet. Quite frankly Dennis didn't know the man was queer— or that he was Robby's type. So it's a surprise when they stumble into each other one late night at the dingy little gay bar close to Trinity's place. It's Robby that starts up the conversation. Innocent— at first.

Summary
“She misses you,” Jack said casually, his eyes on Dennis. Dennis’ throat felt dry. The implication was clear.
“I—” Dennis started, hesitating, “I’ve been busy.”
He’d really been busy. Busy, but his main reason was fear. Jack was new and exciting and incredibly distracting. Dennis feared he’d never get enough of him.
