Centuries of uneventful placidness laid between them, and Hua Cheng would not deny the reemergence of his little vampire didn’t wake his interest. “I’m sure,” Hua Cheng says. And whether it’s a lie or not does not matter to him. He pushes a finger underneath He Xuan’s chin and tips his head up. “When was the last time you fed?”
He Xuan meets his eyes with the same shaven disinterest that he holds for the rest of the world. “Earlier this evening,” he answers.
“Too bad,” Hua Cheng whispers. “I would have offered plenty.”
A sliver of uncharacteristic life swirls in He Xuan’s eyes like a loose feather on the breeze.
“Interested?” Hua Cheng laughs. And he catches the edge of annoyance that flashes between them. Leaning in, he dares a kiss to He Xuan’s cold lips. Laps his tongue between them to slide across the daggered shape of a fang. “Come to my new home. I can give you whatever you desire, my beauty. Let this elder care for you.”
He Xuan willingly shivers into his hold and kisses him deeper. Sometimes catching his prey is too easy.

Then, as if called, a somewhat amused, shy voice spoke up. “Perhaps clan leader Jiang would be willing to talk to me?” Jiang Cheng sat up with a start, locking eyes with a face mostly obscured by an ornate fan. “A-Cheng, long time no see.”

Ziyuan, who’s been busy removing her pearl earrings, goes still. She looks at him through the reflection of her vanity mirror. “Trouble? Our A-Cheng?” The unspoken ‘how absurd’ tacked on to the end is as clear as day. Still, she asks, “What do you mean?”
Ah, how can he put this delicately without sounding preposterous? “By trouble I mean in the form of attention.” A pause. “Lots of attention. Possibly in the form of, uh, seasoned gentlemen.”
Yu Ziyuan turns around and gives him a long, quiet stare. “Fengmian,” she enunciates slowly, carefully, “are you telling me that our son is a magnet for perverted old men?”
