"More what?" Vi asks, still patiently, indulgently still under her touch.
"Freckles," Caitlyn says, and shifts her grip to the nape of Vi's neck, urging her down so Caitlyn can kiss her face, dragging her lips softly, reverently over the new constellations of them blooming across Vi's face. They're faint, light brown, a beautifully chaotic spread stretching across her cheeks, over the slightly crooked bridge of her nose, curling up under her eyes.

Summary
After ten years in Stillwater for a crime she didn't commit, Vi breaks herself out and goes home. Her homecoming doesn't go like she thought it would.
Two years later, she's out of control and out on the streets. She's now a champion pitfighter, a raging alcoholic, and completely on her own. Despite her family's best (and desperate) efforts to help, Vi's on a one-way track to ending up either dead or back in prison.
At the same time, Caitlyn arrives in the undercity to collect data and information for her thesis. She starts her research from a local bar called The Last Drop, which puts her right into Vi's path. Vi might have been out of her family's home for years, but she's still not going to let a topsider put them in danger.
Canon divergence (everyone lives!), enemies to lovers (barely, the lovers aspect happens fast), angst, trauma, addiction, and also fluff and humour (because these things can co-exist!)

Vi looks out at the diner, casting a glare around the dining room. There’s only a couple tables of people, mostly lawyers and law clerks working late at the nearby courthouse taking a late night break.
There. A woman sits at the far end of the counter with long dark hair, some kind of navy suit with a starched pale blue shirt. She’s looking directly at Vi, an expectant look on her face.
Vi curls her lip as she turns around with the plate and looks down at it. It looks fine. They’re fucking eggs. She plucks the cigarette from between her lips and stubs it out in the eggs.

“Aw, cupcake,” Vi schooled her expression into a fake pout, “you can just say that you’ve missed me.”
“I’ve told you to stop calling me that,” Caitlyn’s tone was sharp, “repeatedly. Do you have some sort of short-term memory condition?”
“Nah, it’s just that you’re so sweet,” Vi laced the words with enough venom to make it clear that she actually thought the opposite.
“I’ll show you a cupcake,” Caitlyn said suddenly. And before Vi could point out how nonsensical that comment was, Caitlyn reached out and grabbed a cupcake from the tower of desserts they stood next to and smashed it into Vi’s cheek.
Ever since Zaun and Piltover reached a tentative peace agreement and Vander was given a seat on the council, Vi's been stuck accompanying Vander to various high class events. It wouldn't be so bad if she wasn't constantly running into Caitlyn Kiramman, the daughter of one of the most powerful councilors, who she'd had an antagonistic relationship with since the day they met.
After an incident involving a cupcake, Vi and Caitlyn are forced to pretend to be friends to keep up appearances that things are fine between their families.

Caitlyn observes from the wall as Vi runs the routine, then comes over. She touches Vi’s lower back. Pushes, gently, guiding Vi through a rotation of her hips. Vi’s lower half lights up like a fork in a socket.
“It comes from here,” Caitlyn says. “Not so much the legs. Try it.”
Vi misses Caitlyn’s hand when she steps away. She follows the phantom push until she’s completed the sequence.
Tilting her head, Caitlyn says, “Better, but you’re stiff. Do you feel sexy?”
Vi’s been surrounded by gorgeous women every day, women with bouncier hair, longer legs, more graceful relevés. And instead of admiring them, she’s competing with them. So, no. Vi does not feel sexy.

Lightning flashes outside as Caitlyn reaches the landing, and she stops before one of the floor-to-ceiling windows. Rain pours from the sky, the drops pitter-pattering on the glass while thunder rumbles in the distance. She does not know how long she stands there watching the rain with her eyes lost in the blur of the city, the feeling in her chest growing slowly, steadily. She had managed to smother it before, her face a steely mask as strangers’ arms wrapped around her shoulders and their lips whispered condolences into her ears. As their eyes observed her with pity, and their voices spoke of vengeance and war and responsibilities Caitlyn was not ready to shoulder while her mother’s corpse lay on display a few feet behind her. She had kept it together for as long as she could.
Now, away from all the prying eyes, in the solitude of a home with a buried mother and a grieving father, Caitlyn feels herself begin to crumble.
