Peri realized he was looking at Jorgen at eye level. He'd been too caught up in his rant to realize that he had wriggled free from the powerful fairy's grip and flown up to meet his gaze head on. Peri shrinks up and lowers himself. "I..uh...didn't mean to imply or offend anything, Jorgen! Da Rulez are great as is! I love them so much I use my copy as a pillow!" Peri backtracks.

He wonders if Annabeth can tell the moment the gold fills his ears and his own voice becomes muffled to him. He can’t tell if there are tears in his eyes, but he can see them in Annabeth’s, and he hopes that they blur his face so she doesn’t see the terrified start of his expression.
“I’m okay.” The gold constricts his throat, so he doesn’t know if he’s whispering or crying out when he tells her again, “I’m-”
But then the gold covers his mouth. He can’t see her anymore, or hear her. It's what he expected, what they both knew would happen. He just hopes she gets the shield and moves on with this quest. Maybe his father can still protect her, even if he isn't there.
And then he realizes with an even more terrifying start that he can’t breathe.
What happened when Percy gets trapped by the chair, and what follows.
