“He’s not,” Hawke said. Her spoonful of egg remained frozen halfway between her plate and her mouth. “He’s in the bedroom with Mother. He’s just sleeping, Bethany.”
“He’s breathing,” Bethany agreed quietly, “but he’s already dead. He’s been dead for a while.”

But now she feels almost too aware; aware of the feather-light touch on her side, his breath behind her ear, the way another hand comes to rest on her shoulder.
