As far as Barty could remember, there was always Evan Rosier.
From the first time they had strapped on their karting helmets as kids, side by side, they had been two sides of the same coin. Sometimes, it felt as if the race was meant to be between the two of them, as though every lap, every overtaking maneuver, every small victory had only one purpose: to bring them together.
When Barty finally got into F1 at the age of seventeen, he'd known it'd be a matter of time before his past caught up to him.
And he was right, for 6 years later, as he cemented his place at the top of the sport, the announcement came: Evan Rosier had signed a contract with Ferrari.
If only it was purely a matter of rivalry...

Barty started Hogwarts with very few choices: be good (boring), obey his father (no thank you), or fully embrace the “practically evil” house he got chucked into (yes, that one).
How else, as a deeply talented, incredibly witty, and yes, perhaps slightly arrogant and depraved individual, could he get the attention of Evan Rosier?
Sure, Regulus called Evan a psychopath, and yes, Evan didn’t ever talk, or smile, or touch Barty with anything other than the tip of a knife, but Barty found him terribly misunderstood.
And Jesus fucking Christ, would Evan take them on the adventure of a lifetime – scars, sexual experiments, cave diving, Inferii, and perhaps even a little murder or ten. It was all done in the name of fun and freedom. And besides: Sinners die twice!

Summary
There was a new boy at their school and in their classes. He was quiet, didn't talk much, and Ryan wasn't sure if he had even spoken a single word to anyone here yet. He sat a few chairs in front of Hunter in their English class, and Ryan spent half of the period staring at the back of his head, watching him fiddle with the gold chain and ring around his throat or scribble something in his notebook.
The following Sunday, he appeared at the church with whom Ryan assumed was his mother. While she mingled and met the congregation, he stood off to the side in a corner or followed closely behind her with his head tilted downward. He didn't sing along to any of the songs, didn't follow along in prayer, and every once in a while, Ryan caught him side-eyeing him from the other side of the church, gaze roving over him in something akin to curiosity.
The next time he looked over at him, Ryan gave him a small smile, and the boy turned away quickly, not looking at Ryan again for the rest of the service.
And Ryan couldn't help but smile wider to himself, pleased.

Working on staying on his feet, this new person may be the next thing to knock Barty off his feet, the next catalyst. Maybe. Maybe he will be just the thing to keep Barty on his feet.
Whatever the consequences, Barty is going to have to deal with them. Because this will have consequences, this will have effects, this will change things. For better, or for worse, is yet to become clear.

They lie together like that until Will’s hiccupping gasps soften into steady breaths, until Mike feels him go limp in his arms and he knows he’s fallen back asleep. It always works.

It did look awfully good on Barty. The green strands over his glimmering eyes. It just added up to that mischievous grin he always had on. Of course, Evan would never admit it to him. He was just observing it, unwilling to share said observations.
