Summary
Norton- or, what is he called now, Ronald of Ness- looks back at him just as evenly, nothing given away in the slight curl of his lips. It’s a plastic grin, taken with him from the stage. Years later and Inference still remembers how it felt to see his real smile, shy and self-conscious under the cover of the night sky. To be faced with this counterfeit feels rather like taking a blade to the chest.

Summary
Melly raises a brow at him, not quite smiling- she rarely does- but mouth twitching like she’s doing her best, tentatively authentic as always, and that’s more endearing than anything else she could’ve done.

Summary
The sound of footsteps- heavy boots, slightly uneven with a drag to one leg, soles squeaking on the expensive tiling- has her expression dropping to neutrality in a heartbeat. Melly lowers her glass and regards herself in it once more. “Campbell,” she greets.
He stays silent right up until he reaches the table, lays a curled forearm over top of it. “Plinius,” he answers then, and when she glances over at him, he meets her gaze impassively, good eye gleaming under the shadow of his cap. His other elbow thunks against the counter and he props his chin up on his fist.

Summary
Edgar glances over his shoulder, shifting his weight ever so slightly. Luckily, most of the other actors aren’t on set right now; Luca is the main one who’s meant to be filming scenes today. He looks back. Meets Luca’s eyes for a split second before his own bounce away again, trailing to the wall behind the actor.
“Are you feeling alright?”
Blunt and to the point, because he’s never been good at handling interpersonal affairs with delicacy- much to the chagrin, once more, of his parents. Edgar clears his throat and prepares to try again, but Luca cuts him off.
“Perfectly! Just fine.”
His words are quick, stumbling over each other at the ends, and his movements are just as jerky as he straightens up and keeps his hands carefully at his sides. He is clearly not fine. Edgar debates with himself for one long moment as to whether or not he should push the subject. Of course, the fact that he’s giving it this much thought at all means that really, he’s already made up his mind.

Summary
Away from the world as she once knew it, in this manor that seems to defy the laws of the universe, Ada finds that there is much more solace in entertaining such ideas. Many here are similar, in certain ways; it is not like the structured ways of the asylum, rigid and unyielding. It is with a small flicker of plainly undeniable shame that Ada realizes what courage this must have required of Emily.

Summary
Norton shakes his head. "Look again." He dares to lean over to the side a bit more-barely, nearly. From here, if he bent down, he could nearly lay his head on the other's shoulder. If Dax notices, he doesn't comment on it, and for that, Norton is grateful.
Sharp eyes narrow and study with renewed focus. Norton's own gaze follows lines of brown turned white by the moon, tucked with no real finesse into an elastic hairtie, though he pretends the sky is still the most captivating thing there. He's always been good at pretending, if nothing else.

Summary
“I saw your car out front. 1925 model. Rolls Royce, New Phantom.” Mole reached up with his free hand, the one that wasn’t holding the cigar, and removed his glasses, tucking them into his breast pocket. “And I thought to myself, that can’t be someone coming to see me, because-” He laughed. Smoke curled up from the corners of his mouth. “Nobody drives a car like that unless they’re a fool, or unless they want to be noticed. But nobody who comes to me for help ever wants to be noticed.”
He rested his forearms against the desk, all semblances of hospitality gone. “You asked for my attention; you have it. You’re answering all of my questions before I even consider answering yours.”

Summary
She thinks of laughing, but her breath rattles in her chest, playing her ribs like a pipe organ. Not dead, then; corpses don't breathe.
Maybe jinxed ones do.

Summary
Angela aches to take him into her arms, to soothe his wounds and soften his hastily constructed edges, but she knows she cannot- and besides, it is not that simple; nothing ever is. She leaves her hand on the table, palm facing upwards, and lowers her gaze to the worn wood between them.

Summary
"Another nightmare?" Luca asks, clicking his tongue. His hands settle on either side of Norton's neck, smoothing up and down over the bones that protrude down the base.
"No," Norton lies.

But the fact stands that this is not an ordinary night. Never again will Datura have such a thing as an 'ordinary night', nor will she ever again feel Sway's hand encompass hers, hear those dark tones wind through her ears.

Summary
"Well-" Luca splays out a palm on the tabletop- "the first step to being a detective is knowing the mind of the criminal. How he acts, how he behaves, how he thinks... what he wants." He taps his head with his other hand. "It's all a great big mind game, you see. To understand the crime, you must understand the criminal."

Summary
He looks up at himself, to where the mirror would be on the opposite wall. It's too dark to see his reflection, but he can imagine it; haggard and haunted. Oh, yes, and he can picture the headline now: "Ronald of Ness, an actor who the nation once swooned over. Is he already falling from his prime?"

Summary
Alva has never worked for approval, nor for praise, but for some reason, the idea of pleasing Herman with this new information makes him feel lighter somehow. As he scratches down numbers, he reasons that it's only natural to want to share these findings, but as he glances over to Herman's face, he feels himself hesitate. He looks away with a sharp hiss, raking a hand through his pale hair as he scowls. Something is happening to him, he's certain of it.

Sparrow is staring out the window, though he does pick up the napkin and wipe his eyes rapidly with it. Cavalier switches his attention back to the street. "Somethin' happen at school?" he asks, trying to be as casual as possible while still gently pressing for answers.
"No," Sparrow insists. A long beat of silence follows; then the boy sniffles again. "Yeah," he admits.

"Maybe." Luca watches him with a glint in his own eye. "After you come in here for a couple minutes first."
Norton sits up a little straighter at that, nibbling at the inside of his cheek. This isn't the first time this morning that Luca has attempted to cajole him into the water, but he seems more persistent this time, going on with a tilt of his head: "Please? Even for just a little?"
Well... Norton really can't say no to that face- or voice, for that matter. He feels his resolve crack and shatter. Damn minx.

"Yeah?" Will leans back against the pile of pillows, seeming perfectly content to make this his new abode. Andrew is jealous of how easily he adapts.
"... You know you can't bake," Andrew says at last, when Will's eyebrow crooks up after he takes too long to respond.

Summary
Norton Campbell is the first one he meets who seems to understand how he feels, even if it isn't exactly the same. When they first meet, that brown eye lingers on the pale lines across his exposed shoulders for only half of one terrifying moment before sliding up to his face, and Naib feels something foreign tug at his insides.

Summary
Naib hears footsteps approaching from behind him as he stares out across the land. He doesn't have to turn to know who it is. "Evening, Kreiss."
"Evening," Kreiss answers in kind, as if they just saw each other a day before rather than nearly a year. "Pretty fine night out today."
"It's be finer if I knew what I was doing here." Naib turns at last, crossing his arms. The height difference between himself and Kreiss always throws him off at first; he'll never quite get used to it, but he's learned not to let it bother him. "That was the vaguest letter I've ever received."
"My apologies." Kreiss doesn't look very apologetic, though it's difficult to tell, given the bandana covering his mouth. "I couldn't give away too much on the off chance that someone might have intercepted it. Besides, I knew you'd come either way."
