Summary
There's something painfully obscene in how, seated in a wardroom packed with men laughing and drinking as they shared their meal, Lieutenant Solomon Tozer could feel so invisible.

Summary
Little is speechless when Tozer corners him in his cabin with the proposal that they go to bed together. Little turns him away, well aware that such actions could get them flogged and disrated.
(if only little could take him up on the offer without any consequence.)

The man tells Solomon that he doesn't normally do this. Solomon says fine.
He's also not in the habit of picking up pretty strangers from pubs, but he can indulge every now and again.

Summary
They’d extricated themselves from layers of scarves so that their breath wouldn’t freeze as they talked. Little had edged himself close to ask the question on his mind; now he looked around surreptitiously, fearing they appeared suspicious although it would never occur to anyone that there might be anything untoward.

Summary
Tozer’s lips are parted, his mouth is warm when it meets Little’s. Hands with wide palms and strong fingers grip Little’s shoulders and hold him without grasping at him too hard; but maybe he’d like to be grasped, maybe just a bit, and the fingers curl against his sleeves hard enough for him to feel the pressure of them through the wool. It’s the most secure he has felt since Baffin Bay, since Greenland, since Greenhithe. The most secure he has felt in his entire life.
The ceiling of his cabin appeared before him.- Language:

After Little and Tozer are rescued, Little gets married, adopts his new wife’s vegetarianism, and contracts with a publishing house to write a series of recollections about the expedition. He’s doing well, he thinks, and when Tozer writes asking for work, Little offers him a position at their estate without hesitation, hoping Tozer will be proud of his progress.
He isn’t.

Summary
Had he been that obvious? Up till now, Edward thought he’d done a fine job concealing his longing for Thomas Jopson. But Sergeant Tozer had just proven him wrong; it had, without his consent, become something more than he could possibly conceal.
And what, exactly, was Edward to do with the offer in the sergeant’s carefully worded reply?
“There’s some as wouldn’t mind more than lookin’, sir.”
With a bruise, a button, and a cigarette or three, once (nearly) in the orlop, once or twice (memorably) in the first lieutenant’s cabin, and (most importantly) without the knowledge of stewards named Thomas — Edward Little and Solomon Tozer come to an arrangement.

Summary
In a camp filled with the dead and dying, Edward Little sits down to wait for the end, but instead of death finding him it is Sergeant Tozer; ragged and wild-eyed but in surprisingly good health. He killed a bear, he claims, and will share what he has. It’s not a lie, but as Edward feels his bones shudder and twist beneath his skin and begins to see impossible things, he realises it isn’t the whole story.

"Anything I can help with?" and, before he could think better of it, "Do you need a caulking, sir? In your cabin?"
The look Little gave him after that particular remark bordered on despairing. Hickey was forced to admit it was ill-timed.
Or, Hickey catches Sergeant Tozer (who has done nothing but irritate him) staring at Lieutenant Little (of whom he'd previously thought very little of). Planning, speculating and improvised attempts at seduction ensue.

Summary
At the clatter of the shale beneath his feet, the beast pulled its too human face from Little’s innards, lips wet with blood. It perfunctorily stepped forward, crushing the rest of the lieutenant's torso beneath its paw, and began to suckle out his soul.
Fear turned oddly to fury, to anguish. Little’s soul was iridescent and accusatory and blindingly bright, vanishing into the beast’s maw in a stream of golden light. Solomon made a choked sound, raised his rifle, and charged forward.
Snorting, the beast regarded him flatly and said, “Tozer.” Then, as he stopped, confused, it added, louder. “Tozer!”
He jerked awake, tangled in sweat-soaked sheets, chest heaving and blind with panic. A hand caught his shoulder, gentle but strong, and kept him from leaping to his feet. Blinking, he settled and found Edward Little leaning over him in his nightgown, wrapped in a brown woolen robe. It was still strange to see him in anything but blue.
In which Solomon Tozer has a nightmare.

Summary
Edward in the flesh is almost the same as Edward in a daguerreotype: indistinct and stationary, often with a blank, but piercing, faraway gaze that seems to be pointed at something Solomon can never see. He sits, and stays seated until prompted to stand, never voluntarily, never of his own accord. Solomon comes home in the evenings to find Edward in a chair at the table, half-slumped, chin in hand, and can immediately tell he’s been there for hours.
