Summary
The average human can survive just over five hours buried alive. It’s one of those things Buck just knows, and he can’t recall where from. Maybe he was taught it at the Fire academy, maybe it was in a documentary, the kind he puts on in the background while he cooks. Whatever it was, now it’s just one of those things he can spout out when they’re on a vaguely related call, or he and Eddie are watching a movie, probably horror.
He never thought it was going to be something he’d have to reckon with himself.

Buck gets buried alive and Eddie freaks out about it. Love confessions, whatnot.

Summary
“I kinda had a run-in with a ceiling, or at least a part of it,” Buck tries to laugh, but grimaces when pain blooms in his side. Eddie nods but doesn’t say anything else, just starts working methodically at cleaning Buck’s side. Buck hisses as Eddie touches a particularly tender spot near his rib, and Eddie apologizes quickly. The bathroom’s silent, minus the sounds of Buck’s slightly labored breathing and the hum of the lights above them. Eddie patches the cut on Buck’s side first, then begins searching for any other injury in the area. When he’s satisfied with his assessment, he turns his attention back to Buck.

Summary
After rehabbing his injuries and putting in a lot of work, Buck is ready to go back to the 118. He wants to go back to work, and be back with his family. But his return takes more work than he thought it would, and people aren't as happy to see him as he was expecting, which makes the return a lot harder to deal with than he thought it would be. As things pile on and his support system shrinks, Buck finds himself wondering if it's all worth it and what he should do.

Summary
Buck could already hear the sounds of the flags at Tommy’s funeral, waving in the air. He could hear the speaker saying Tommy’s full name across the grass, saying a final prayer as his body was lowered into the ground. He could hear sobbing from Tommy’s mother and the flag being folded until it fell into her hands with apologies filling the air.
He could feel Eddie’s hand on his shoulder, Maddie’s leg pressing against his on the lawn, both trying to comfort him as he stared numbly at the casket. He could see Bobby standing off to the side with Athena, watching him subtly, making sure he didn’t fall apart because he hadn’t said a thing since he arrived.
He could smell the fresh dirt, it had only just been dug up, the death was unexpected and it was short notice to prepare the plot. He could smell fresh roses, everyone waiting to take their turn, to walk the flower toward the hole in the ground to say goodbye to the pilot. But, he wasn’t just a pilot. No, Tommy was everything.

Summary
So here was the thing: Buck was maybe, possibly, having a bit of a breakdown.
It was when he found himself standing in the station kitchen, debating jamming the paring knife he was using to peel an apple into the back of his hand to see if he felt anything, that he could finally pinpoint a whisper of emotion inside the cavern of himself.
Unfortunately, that emotion was absolute fucking terror.In which Buck's laundry list of near-death and actual-death experiences catches up with him, post-cruise-disaster. He has, however, two things on his side: a handful of healthy coping mechanisms, and a best friend who won't let him flounder alone.

Summary
Tommy watched him in the soft light of the bedside lamp and pressed his lips on his forehead, which still felt warm but at least the smallest amount cooler than before. The medication he'd managed to get Evan to take before the shower was probably starting to work.
He just hoped that when they would wake up in the morning, the fever would be gone and Evan would feel better, because judging from the way Eddie had talked about Evan and his dislike for hospitals, Tommy wasn’t looking forward to the possibility of having to go there. He’d seen Evan uncomfortable enough already and the last thing he wanted was for him to be outright miserable. Even if he would be there to hold him through it.

To celebrate the end of the school year, Christopher's class is going to the beach. Christopher wants to go, but he has one request, that Buck comes with them. Because if Buck is there, everyone will be safe. The fun day ends in near disaster and Christopher is left feeling angry that his Buck is as human as everyone else.
Buck is spiraling - after so many near death experiences, he's not sure how to break out of the silence he's fallen into. He knows his family is worried about him, but he can't feel anything. Will the love of his family be enough to bring him out of the quiet?

“Dinner and a show,” Evan comments, his eyes zeroed in on where Tommy’s sleeves are pushed up to his elbows. “Maybe I should get sick more often.”
Tommy flicks a small piece of ginger at him. “If you wanted me to cook for you, all you had to do was bat those pretty eyelashes of yours.”
It happens so quickly. One second Evan is grinning exhaustedly at him, and the next thing Tommy knows, Evan’s eyes go wide as what little colour he has left drains from his face. Tommy makes an aborted move towards him, but Evan shoves his chair back from the island and bolts for the bathroom.

Summary
Everything was on track and they were about to follow Hen and Chimney when suddenly the ground shifted beneath them and they were falling. Everything happened in a flurry of movements and Buck is pretty sure something hit his head because he blacks out for a minute, groaning back to conciousness.
"Buck, you with me?" Eddie's voice sounded weird, almost strained. He could feel something dripping into his eye and went to move his hand to wipe it away but something was holding onto his wrist tightly, painfully. "Buck don't move, I've got you okay?"
"Huh?" Buck blinked sluggishly, looking around which in retrospect, he really wished he hadn't have done because the world was spinning but he wasn't on solid ground, he was floating.

A routine call ends with Buck and Eddie hanging on for dear life, literally.

Summary
His face was completely white, a glazed look in his eyes and swaying on the spot. “Buck?” Athena presses, and Buck seems to try and find her, eyes darting around but never fully focusing on her.
“T-Thena-“ His voice is weak, hesitant. “I-I-“ Athena sees it happen, his face scrunching up and then he’s doubling over, vomiting up on the floor.
“We need help!” Athena shouts, rushing over to Buck. Red splatters on the ground, Buck was vomiting up blood. Before she can get to him, Buck’s legs crumble from underneath him. His eyes roll in the back of his head and he falls to the ground.
Or: Buck is injured badly during the bridge collapse and doesn't notice until they get to the hospital

Summary
“So what does that mean?” Buck asked, hands shaking as he squinted at the x-rays before him. It was early, and he had gotten maybe two hours of sleep last night because of nerves and back to back coughing fits. He was too tired for sugar coating, and that’s exactly what the doctor was doing.
“It means that we found something irregular in your x-rays and scans.” The doctor looked sympathetic, and ten years older than he did the day before.
“What did you find Doc?” Bucks hands were starting to shake and he didn’t know why. He doesn’t even know what was wrong yet, it could still be a virus.
“Are you sure you don’t want anybody with you right now, Mr. Buckley?” Dr. Simmons' voice was laced with sympathy, and Buck was honestly confused why he wasn’t writing out a prescription for some extra strength antibiotics and sending him on his way— it was just a virus.
“Tell me.” Buck meant to put some conviction in his tone but all that came out was a choked whisper.
It was just a virus, a common cold that he couldn’t shake—a—a
“We found a tumor in your left lung, about the size of a lemon and the reason for your cough and chest pain.”
It was silent.

Summary
The worst thing is that Buck gets it.
Honestly, he 100% understands where Eddie is coming from. Christopher, at the horrifically young age of 10, had already dealt with the death of a parent, a natural disaster or two, and then another near-death of a parent. It’s right that he’s scared of losing Eddie, and Buck knows that he would have done the same thing if it was him.
It still hurts.

He’s fine, and when he looks in the mirror, he still has the scratches across his face from the branch that knocked Chris from his arms. When he looks in the mirror, he can still feel the last scrap of Chris’s shirt ripping from his hands, can feel the water rushing into his mouth when he’d opened his mouth to scream Christopher’s name.
He’s fine. His ear is the least of his worries, when Chris still has healing cuts and scrapes from all that Buck couldn’t protect him from.
