Du Cheng’s chest and back are littered with bruises, each of them telling Shen Yi a more detailed story about the pain Du Cheng went through that night. They reveal to Shen Yi the small fragments related to Du Cheng's bruises, from the steel railings to the cemented ground.
Du Qing might have immediately taken him to the hospital, but surely the pain still lingers. How was Du Cheng even standing and investigating with these bruises? Did he manage to rest the night after the fight? Did he take painkillers to numb at least some of the aches?
“Maybe it’s good Zhang-ju suspended you. Now Cheng-dui has no other option but to rest until the bruises get better.”

Summary
It should’ve been Shen Yi who got stabbed by the knife, not Du Cheng. Du Cheng isn't supposed to be there. Du Cheng is supposed to be sitting here and waiting for the doctors to finish treating Shen Yi. It was his fault that Du Cheng got injured. If Shen Yi was a better police officer, then none of these would’ve happened.
Du Cheng once told him that bulletproof vests they wear aren’t knife-resistant—they might hold off a slash attack but wouldn’t offer much protection against a stabbing attack. If the angle and the force were right, it’d still injure a person.
Shen Yi doesn’t expect to learn this the hard way.

“We were,” Lan Xichen says but then he shakes his head. “I just wanted to talk to you and I wanted to do it away from prying eyes,” he tacks on and Jiang Cheng narrows his eyes at him.
He understands that the constant scrutiny in Lotus Pier must be a bit much for Lan Xichen, but his people aren’t hostile; they simply want to make sure Lan Xichen only has his best interest in heart and Jiang Cheng thought he was okay with that.
“A talk?” he repeats and dread settles in his stomach when Lan Xichen nods without the usual hint of a smile on his face. “About what?” Jiang Cheng forces himself to ask, even though deep in his heart he already knows what Lan Xichen is going to say.
