Dennis didn't talk about his family with Michael very much. He didn't want to bother him with his problems when the older man obviously had issues of his own; it just didn't feel right to bog him down even further, especially since Michael didn’t exactly ask about any of it.
Dennis had given him the basics though, slowly, over dinner or during long nights when they laid in bed after a sweaty fuck: he didn't get along with his brothers when they were growing up but they were okay now (to a certain extent, anyway), he didn't really fit in with anyone back home, his father was a hard man to love—the usual small town, closeted gay kid story.
He didn't tell him about the belts and the bruises and the nights spent in the barn alone.
“Nothing’s wrong,” Dennis answered hesitantly, deciding to be more or less honest and hoping his tone landed somewhere between casual and dismissive. “I just—I’m probably going to go home for Christmas this year.”

God knows that Dennis has been harboring strange, perverted desires for as long as he’s known how to want. God knows that Dennis’s peers never could capture his attention the way their fathers did. God, more than anyone else, knows the sheer depths of the youngest Whitaker child’s depravity. All-seeing being, right? That’s the way the story goes.

It starts like this, a week living in a tent. The wind blew ferociously and he spent each night shivering with one blanket to keep him warm. Barely interacting with his family, that was almost a relief, and having nothing to do but schoolwork, that wasn’t so bad it just didn’t take up his time as much as he wished it would, the curse of being smart.
There was one crucial part of that week, the lack of food. Turns out he was rather easy to forget, nobody came to get him, he wasn’t even given lunch to take to school. There were a few late bowls of cereal but for the most part he just starved.
The weight seemed to drop off.

They struggle with basic literature while he can read complex sentences, he can do mental maths while they have to write the problem out. He wants to be a normal kid with normal friends but life just has a way of sticking a knife right in his back.

The linoleum of the Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center didn't smell like the dirt back home. The smell of the Nebraskan plains at midnight is rich, it’s dirt, rusted iron, dry hay, and the metallic tang of something cold dying in the root cellar. Dennis Whitaker grew up with that smell, a native of a rural town where the horizon was a jagged line of silos and the isolation was relentless enough to swallow anyone.
By the time he arrived at the Pitt as a fourth-year medical student, Dennis Whitaker had perfected the act of being almost normal. He knew how to stand just inside a doorway and wait half a second too long, long enough for someone to say, “Yeah, come in,” without realizing he needed them to. He knew how to laugh at the right times, how to reduce being from Nebraska to something simple and harmless—farm boy, cornfields, small towns, nothing worth examining too closely. Boring.
He met Dr. Robinivatch on the first day of his first rotation. Not in a moment that felt significant, not at first.

Dennis Whitaker is a youth pastor on his first religious conference since being ordained. He does, however, believe that God has brought upon this snow storm so Dennis could test his will against the demon of lust.
Michael Robby just took over as head Rabbi in his Temple, he is making an effort to move away from his old teacher's rule and engage outside of the Jewish faith. Despite what many have told him, he does not believe he is a good Rabbi, because he does not think of God as a figure who demands and rules, but as a cloud of security that he can provide to other people. He does not think God brought this snowstorm down upon them, but he does know for a fact that he needs to help this boy.
