“Yes,” Annabeth said.
Percy flattened his hand on her waist. He relished the immediate warmth that seeped from beneath her shirt. In case she felt cold again, he moved his hand downward and up again in hopes that it could warm her up more.
Annabeth let out a low sigh and burrowed backwards into his front. His hand slipped down until his fingers were pressing into her tummy. She didn’t say anything or undo her move. In fact, her breathing started to slow.

They're sitting unnecessarily close, bodies angled toward each other in a way that makes the spacious backseat feel intimate. Her heart does that strange stuttering thing—Lu-cas, Lu-cas—and when she looks back at him, his expression has gone soft. Tender. It's the same way he used to look at her years ago, back before either of them knew what to do about it.
His palm slides up her arm, slow and deliberate. Up the side of her throat. His thumb traces her cheekbone and her breath hitches, something hot and anxious twisting in her chest. The touch is gentle but it still stirs up all her old fears about letting anyone this close, about letting him see the parts of her that are still broken.

Summary
“You’re not useless, Max.”
She laughs. It’s absolutely ill-timed, but it wrenches itself from her chest unwittingly. “Be serious,” she says, but it’s hollow and choked. She’s always been bad at grasping the concept that she can’t have her cake and eat it too. It’s not like she wants Lucas to agree, but she can hardly deny the truth in front of them.
For the second time today, Max watches as Lucas’s eyes grow shiny. At first, she’s sure it’s her eyes playing tricks on her, but as soon as a tear travels from eye to cheek to jawline, it’s impossible to kid herself. They run off of his chin and travel down his neck with surety, a path well worn, and Max finds all of the breath in her lungs has left her. “Lucas–”
“You’re not useless,” he says again. Max wants to touch him with a hunger that is reserved for the starving.
