“What?” Dylan asks, gaze quickly snapping to Ryan. “Of course I was.”
“Oh,” Ryan says. “Okay.”
“I wouldn’t have- I would have said no. I wouldn’t have gotten up if I didn’t want to,” Dylan says, watching Ryan carefully as he rounds the chair and sinks down on it.
“Yeah,” Ryan says. “Okay,”
Dylan bites his lip for a split second, and he feels his face heat up with a blush even before he opens his mouth to speak. “I liked it, just so you know. Don’t worry about why you did it or if I wanted it, because I did, and it was nice. And everything’s okay.”
He’s aware that technology is betraying him, broadcasting his rising heartbeat loud and proud to the both of them.
“Lying can make your heart beat faster,” Ryan says, eyeing him.
Dylan and Ryan move in together and try to put what happened behind them.

He’s always been a softie, a leaky faucet, and the war hasn’t changed that, so he doesn’t know why the sob that smacks him startles him bad enough that he grips the strap of his bag doubly hard, ready to swing it around like a battering ram, ready to find that cloying, invisible enemy. He’s not being ambushed, on his belly in the muck and camellias, cypress hanging low, moonlight casting an eerie smile upon Lake Como like it’s enjoying the hell out of muffled gunshots and the wet grunt of lifeblood spattering onto the undergrowth. He’s not trucking through a river that sucks at his boots like quicksand kisses, gun raised and one eye squinted shut to peek through the scope. He’s not under the street in Liverpool clutching his own hand to hide the shake, catching Peggy’s eye across the deep dank dark like she’d have anything solid to give him besides that wan shrug.
That’s done. He’s safe.
He’s just a weenie.

She tore her eyes away from a cratered thoracic cavity to look at the living soldier beside her. He was young, a boy really, covered in sweat and filth, with pale tear tracks down his face. He had the dead man’s blood all over the front of his uniform, and probably also on the hand that was touching Jean.
The field hospital was half a mile from the current front line. How much of that distance had he carried the dead man, before he found a stretcher?
“Doc,” said the boy, eyes wide. “Fix him, please.”
