➜ I love the main character, and I love that this is a story about older people - people who've had their whole life to learn to understand themselves, but still have the possibility to make new decisions and go new directions and learn new things
➜ and the story is so beautifully constructed too! idk, I don't even remember the details rn, but while I was reading it I was admiring the way the story was using the balancing and forefronting of different story elements to great effect
➜ also the hints of worldbuilding and backstory we get are super compelling
➜ and I love how it ends!

Xie Lian doesn’t remember falling asleep in the woods.
If he really was teleported here without his knowledge or consent, Xie Lian figures he ought to find out why. He thickens his skin and mentally recites the password to Hua Cheng’s communication array; and if his ears turn a bit red at saying the words, then at least there’s no one around to see. San Lang, he calls out, are you there?
The silence that follows his question feels decidedly heavy, but with what, Xie Lian isn’t sure. Then comes Hua Cheng’s answer, flat and icy as a frost-covered lake: Who the fuck is this, and how do you have my array password?
Xie Lian raises his palms in an instinctual gesture of surrender, but of course Hua Cheng can’t see him. San Lang, it’s me, he replies, alarmed.
A beat. You have three seconds to answer me, or I’ll bombard your head with such a frightening sound your brain leaks out your ears, Hua Cheng snarls.

➜ I love how jingyan keeps on being forcibly reminded of lin shu throughout the fic in various ways....how much he's on his mind, how much his connection with mcs makes jingyan think of lin shu. the way that tension is handled is so good, with what the reader knows but jingyan doesn't, quite. can't quite let himself see.
➜ and the ways these two are desperate to be able to be open and vulnarable with each other!! but. they have other goals. that are more important, in the end than the simple things they want for themselves.

Disgraced former child star and current struggling street musician Xie Lian sends off an audition tape to a new movie on a wild impulse, and then runs into an interesting man while he's performing. And again that evening, and again the next day. When he's asked to travel to Atlantic City for a table read for the movie, his new friend, Hua Cheng, offers to drive him, and he proceeds to run into a number of old acquaintances (many of whom he didn't realize still considered him a friend), learn a few heart-breaking secrets, and fall absolutely catastrophically in love with a man he's pretty sure is already taken.
