The Ryland Grace Memorial Diner sat between a construction site and a cluster of small apartments on the recovering streets of San Francisco.
It was founded in 1972, renamed in 2051, and in 2053, a statue of a schoolteacher was erected within its walls. Now, it attracted tourists and students alike, bright eyes and eager minds all competing for a view of Earth’s most beloved man in man’s most beloved habitat.

It's been a full year of living in close quarters on the Hail Mary. Grace was bound to mess up eventually.
If Grace was still on Earth, he would have plenty of options for places to go. A quiet park, maybe a movie theater, a walk on the beach. Something like that. As it is, stuck on the Hail Mary, he just doesn’t have that many options of places to go after a fight with his roommate.

The Eridian thrills a high sound that doesn’t get picked up by the translator which means that it has no clear meaning. Like when a human gasps or sucks in a deep breath. It actually sounds a little like that. When they notice that I’m staring straight at them they scramble back into their hiding spot and hold very still.
A child, I realize with a start.
That’s a child!
“Hey,” I call and the kid squeaks again. I was about to get to my feet but abort the movement and crawl closer on my hands and knees until I'm inches away from the xenonite wall. I wait and it takes me much too long to realize that they don’t have to peek around the corner to see if I’m still there.
“Hey there,” I try again, my voice low and calm. It’s my teacher voice, the one I use for shy and scared students.
Used.
The fact that I haven’t had to use it for years and it still comes to me automatically almost knocks the air out of my lungs but this is not about me, it’s about making sure the little pebble doesn’t die of fright from the scary alien. “Hi, I’m Grace. It’s alright, you don’t have to be scared.”

I’m blushing again. This freakin’ guy. “Rocky, people don’t belong in zoos.”
“We watch movie! Zoos for in danger animals. Very rare. Enclosed for safety.” Rocky hums louder.
I power through the manipulative soothing. “It’s endangered animals, and yes, technically. But there are sanctuaries as well. Those are private habitats, so the animals don’t get stressed out by visitors.”
“Visitors stress out Grace, question?”
“One particular visitor does all the time, actually.”

"Good. Amaze. Many things the same on very different planets. Now sing clothing song please."
Well, he'd distracted Rocky for some time, at least. "I want to say before I sing this, please don't judge all human songs on these songs. We have other ones."
"Will sing together after I hear. I cannot judge a song I am in."
"Hold onto that thought," Ryland mumbled. There were a small handful of Cats songs that weren't a complete disaster without musical accompaniment. Well, really there was one song. He'd never sung it, to his knowledge, sober or outside of the lower half of a shower cubicle. "Midnight… not a sound from the pavement…"

It takes everything in her to reach that tiny red lever.
She flicks the switch.
Everything slows.
She heaves large breaths of air as she leans over to Grace, grasps the back of his head gently in her hands.
“Is okay, I’m here. We are here now. I’m sorry we were late.”
