Deputy Josephson briefly halted next to Wolfwood, hands twitching for just a second. Wolfwood couldn’t help barking out a laugh at the mere sight. Too easy.
“You ever handled a man of my caliber before?” Wolfwood batted his eyes. “Not to worry, I’ve had my run around the block. I’ll be gentle.”

Wolfwood would just like to have Vash to himself for one night. He does not get that. So he decides to make it everyone else's problem.

They're lying in bed, naked , of course, given that they'd come back to their room and fallen upon each other in a frenzy immediately after eating dinner. Vash's cheek is pillowed on Wolfwood's chest, prosthetic arm slung across his body as Wolfwood smokes. Their bodies are fresh with cooling sweat, and Wolfwood lets his fingers play along the dips and ridges of scar tissue along Vash's back. He wonders, not for the first time, how Vash had managed to reach some of these, whether he'd had help, someone bandaging his wounds long before Wolfwood was even a glimmer in his Mama's eye. He runs his fingertips over a long, jagged line of scar tissue.
"Do you even remember how you got all these?" he says, voice coming out rough from the smoke. He feels Vash tense underneath him and not for the first time curses his stupid mouth.
Vash relaxes again after a second, tilting his head on Wolfwood's chest. "Mm," he says, a low hum into Wolfwood's skin, "Most of them? I remember that one, at least."
Wolfwood presses his fingers against the jagged, hard line of tissue. "Yeah?"

Your body carries the mask of being human, but when you look a little closer, you can see it isn't true. Your pupils don't contract in the sunlight. You don't breathe as fast as a human, the movement of your chest slow and steady and vaguely hypnotic. There are no pale blue veins on the inside of your wrist, your elbows, your temples. Small differences, from the outside. But differences nonetheless.
And then someone opens you up.

"Is it me, Vash?" Vash smiles kindly at Nicholas, but does not answer. Listen to "Once More To See You," "There's Nothing Left For You," and "My Love Mine All Mine" by Mitski while you read this. These songs didn't inspire the work, but they definitely helped me channel that sense of hopeless love that is doomed to never be confessed by either person.

Wolfwood’s palm landed on Vash’s forehead, heavy and warm and edged with the sharp bite of calluses.
The world went white.
Vash had learned long ago that time was different for humans. They needed nearly a quarter of a second to react to anything, and Vash had fundamentally shifted his systems to stay aligned to that, because life got boring fast when everything moved slower than you. But the weight of Wolfwood’s hand on his forehead opened up the gulf between the click of the second hand, and Vash was falling, falling, falling, through endless milliseconds of blinding light as a bell tone rang in his bones and started to vibrate outwards--
Deep inside Vash, a door labeled NICHOLAS D. WOLFWOOD opened to let a spark through, one unmistakably flavored with cigarette smoke and gunpowder and all-encompassing guilt. A soul with a direct line to his. A connection between two fucked up points.

He would feel restless in any other world, but here he finds himself content with waiting most of the time. It’s been about twenty or thirty odd years, he thinks— he has so much to tell him about, things about technology and new feats, about the small ways humans are finding ways to be impossibly kind as much as they are cruel. Thirty years is enough for rises and falls of events; humans are busy.
(When you last saw it, December was half as large. Did you know? There are ferns now, they’ve started planting things in the earth. I grew a carrot as large as my head last week.)
