Summary
Norton Campbell is a strange man, and likely one that Dax wouldn’t have spared a second glance if they had met under nearly any other circumstances. As things have turned out, they’ve come to reach a kind of understanding, a companionship that hasn’t yet been named. Now, maybe it never will.

Summary
Norton waits patiently as Dax sits halfway up, bracing himself on his elbows, and looks around, taking in his surroundings. His heart is thumping quickly in his chest as he waits for Dax’s brain to catch up with his senses. What will he have to say for himself? Will he even recognize Norton? Will he remember him?
When Dax turns to face Norton again, his expression is harrowed. “How long has it been?”
“What?” Norton blinks.
“I don’t-” Dax touches his head, wincing. “I don’t remember how we got here. I must have hit my head during the last attack. How long have we been holed up here?”

Summary
Daken produces another surgical blade, this one with a wicked hook to it, and twirls it between his fingers in what must be a mockery of Bullseye’s dexterity. “Of you? Please. Look at the mess you’ve gotten yourself into.”
He slides to his feet, slinky as a panther, and approaches Bullseye’s table again. “Who was the last person to hire you?”

Summary
The boot is still pressing into her, heel sharp against her leg. Bullseye kicks it away as inconspicuously as she can. Daken shifts in her seat, acquiescing for a brief, merciful moment; then, to Bullseye’s horror, she reaches over under the table and puts her hand on her knee.

Summary
Against her better judgment, she picks up the box again, tossing the tissue paper to the floor next to the bed, and stares at the contents. Leather straps that form a harness- a real special kind, the kind that’s far more intimidating than a gun holster. She knows what it is, even though she feels like she shouldn’t.

Summary
Bullseye fumbles for one of the knives stashed away in his costume. He holds it up to hover over Daken’s neck. “Won’t kill ya, not yet.” He grins crookedly, drinking in the moment. “But I wanna see blood. Enough so I can get nice and personal with it.”
“You’re so crass,” Daken says, but he’s smiling. It’s fond, like Bullseye is a pet who’s done something to take his fancy. “You’ll have to make it quick.”

Summary
“Get undressed,” Daken tells her abruptly.
“What’d you say to me?” Bullseye recoils. While Daken always carries a general air of sultriness around her, there’s none of the usual flirtation about the order, leaving her more baffled than anything.
“Strip,” Daken says pleasantly. Before Bullseye can enact violence on her, Daken adds, “And put your civvies on.”

Summary
Against her will, Bullseye’s stare dawdles its way back to Daken. She’s already getting dressed, although it looks like the blonde is reaching out to her with soft complaints. Black panties get slowly drawn up tan hips, cashmere gets buttoned down her inked torso. No bra, Bullseye’s mind supplies. As usual, Daken’s cleavage pops out the top of her shirt with just the right balance between class and seduction. She swallows and tries to blame the persistent lump in her throat on disgust.

Summary
“Kaz,” says Big Boss, liking the way his voice shatters the silence, liking the way Adam curls around him and puts a hand around his throat to feel the vibration of it, and yet almost too aware of the weight it carries. Maybe he doesn’t like it so much after all. “Come here.”

Summary
“Fuck.” Sounding like there aren’t any other words in his vocabulary, Kidd presses a little too hard and Killer winces, closing his eyes. That gets him a rapid shake to the shoulder. “Kil, dammit, look at me.”
But he can’t. He feels like he’s falling, like the world is slanting and tossing him into a pocket of void. “Sorry, captain,” he mumbles again, and the last thing he feels before he loses consciousness is Kidd dragging him into his arms.

Summary
He reaches for his hat with an automatic clench of his fingers and remedies his mistake by feigning adjustment of his blazer, crinkling the midnight blue of the silk. “Do you want to leave?”
Ronald thinks about it- pretends to think about it, eye sliding from side to side and nearly rolling in its heavy-lidded socket, all the while dragging her fingers down the fur collar of the coat draped over her elbow. “Yes,” she says only once she’s allowed enough time to pass between their words, “let’s.”

Summary
Annabel Lee lingered at the door to watch, arms folded over one another and embracing herself at the waist. The lacy white of her gown stirred the floor, breathing terrible delicacy into the heat of the room, and the soft sound remained like an echo long after the piano came to a stop.

Summary
“Excellent.” Orpheus strides down the corridor, and Frederick shuffles to keep up, wrapping her coat back around herself as she does. “A shame that the other guests are all resting,” he adds as she catches up at the very top of the stairs, “or I might have asked you to play something.”
“You assume that I would have agreed.” Frederick huffs her way past him, cane clicking on each stair as she makes her careful way down.
“I know that you would have.” He keeps pace with her now, and she can’t decide whether that offends her more or less. It’s better than him being behind her, at the very least. She hates the feeling of a stare on her back, but those shrewd black eyes in particular watching her every move might have driven her into a scrambling run.

Summary
“I wasn’t expecting you this early. I was only out for a minute.” Inference exhales and tugs at the lapels of his coat, hands drifting down to his sides immediately after. It seems as though he’s about to say something else, but when the ensuing silence begins to stretch into something unbearable, Luca coughs.
“Well, I hope you don’t mind that I let myself in.”
She’s not an idiot, comically far from it, but she knows just when to say the perfectly wrong things.
“No. It’s good that you did.” He’s still bad at lying. When he really looks at her for the first time, his left eye visibly wanders and takes its time to catch up. It’s a bit distracting.

Summary
“Cigs,” he grunts.
“Here. Get them yourself.” Melly pushes his pants over to him with her knee. Campbell scowls but digs through the threadbare pockets anyway until he pulls out a pack of Woodbines.
“Light,” he drawls out.
“Get it yourself,” Melly tells him again. She gives the pants a pointed shove, this time with her elbow.

Summary
Norton surreptitiously scoops up a gold coin from one of the smaller tables, squeezing it into the hollow of his palm like a nervous tic. “Well?” He glances over his shoulder, jawline tight, and Naib suddenly realizes that this really might not be the best idea.

Summary
He picks at his manicured nails. A bit of dry skin is peeling off at the corner of his index finger; he frowns and resists the urge to bite it off. “She was arrogant. Spent a lot of time around rich patrons who could’ve bought the whole place out if they wanted to. A real Parisian diva.”
“From what I’ve heard, that’s how some of your other peers would describe you.”
Ronald turns around. Inference is watching him with a bland, unreadable expression. A heavier wind picks up, and Ronald feels the chill of it through his suit. “You have been asking after me, detective,” he observes with a smile.

Summary
She thinks he’s dead until she sees the faint rise and fall of his chest. He certainly looks like a corpse otherwise, beaten nearly to a pulp. Melly picks her way around to stand at his side, gazing down at the carnage, and it’s only then that she realizes his eyes are open and he’s looking back at her.
