“It’s not safe up on the rooftops. Go home.” Eraserhead says. He worries, every time. Shouto has learnt to sit down before he gets there, so that he doesn’t look like he’s about to jump. But a kid sitting alone on a rooftop still isn’t normal. Not that Shouto ever was.

Shouto makes a deal with the devil, to escape from the future his father had mapped out for him. It doesn’t take long for him to realise that being forgotten by everyone is not a blessing, but a curse.

Hunter shrieks because floors should not speak. The floor—or, more precisely, the abomination goo puddled on it—then begins to coalesce into a familiar shape. Mere seconds later, Darius Fucking Deamonne stands in front of Hunter with one hip cocked to the side and an imperious eyebrow arched. All of that would be very intimidating, if it weren’t for the fact that he’s also wearing a lavender bathrobe and fuzzy cat-shaped slippers.

Zuko had never excelled at anything. Azula was a prodigy. Uncle always knew what to say. And Father... Father was strong, iron-like. But Zuko had only ever been good at surviving. So when he was kidnapped by the Southern Water Tribe, he expected to fight as he always had. He didn’t expect to be taught instead how to live.
In a warring land, the Water Tribe forgave the enemy in an act of defiance. For this, he was torn from them, and this time, his wounds won't heal so easily.
Forced back into nothing but survival, the last person Zuko expected to see was Hakoda's son. Hakoda was a promise of safety. The relentless blue of Sokka’s eyes was a promise of happiness. Zuko could have both if he just reached out his hands, but he found them clutching into fists. After all, he’d been burned one too many times.
But hey, at least between Hakoda and Sokka, Zuko could appreciate the family resemblance of pure, asinine stubbornness.

my dumbass thought this was finished so i buckled myself in for 400k words only to find out after chapter 44 ......
anyways, when the author said "it gets worse before it gets better" they fucking MEANT IT. holy shit. the things zuko fucking goes through- its just one thing after another holy shit dude. im usually not a big fan of constant trauma after trauma, and neither am i usually a big fan of giant longfics for the sole fact that i can get bored very easily, but thsi fic REVITALIZED my atla obsession. big rec. love zukka. the trauma recovery in this fic is so so well-written. the anger and the grief and the gentleness and the paragraphs upon paragraphs of descriptions are exactly what i love in a fic <3<3

ohhhh this fic iscurrently RUINING me. binged it until 5 in the morning. the characterization of every character in this fic is genuinely, from the bottom of my heart, PHENOMENAL. ESPECIALLY hiori and rin. i love love love LOVE how their relationship develops, how it's so small in the moment but if you skip back you'll realise just how much they've actually grown. personally, i don't tend to read slowburns because i'm an impatient pussy, but the writing of this just drew me in chapter after chapter. EVERY scene and every word is crafted so masterfully that it feels HUMAN. they feel so so so complex, every feeling is described so wonderfully i actually can't stand it. i already love hiorin, but the way they developed here in thsi fic specifically made me love them a thousand times more. when they fight, when they make-up, when they comfort each other, when they're simply just in each other's presence- this author just GETS IT. ong. this is my love letter to the author. i love hiorin sm. this is an absolute treat.
also, take a shot every time shidou appears without a shirt on. you may die from alcohol poisoning.
