It’s funny how the space a person leaves behind can sometimes feel just as substantial as the person themselves.
In the three years since John died, Alex has been fine. Totally fine. Restless-leg-syndrome fine. Twitter-arguments-at-3am fine. But still, he texts John’s old number now and then. There’s a comfort in flinging words into a digital ravine, and no one but him ever sees the messages, so no harm done, right?
Then John’s number gets reassigned, and suddenly there’s someone listening, and Alex might have to confront the fact that sometimes the digital ravine shouts back.
(So it's a bit of angst, pretending to be a romcom, with a sprinkling of text-fic elements. Something for everyone)

Recently Aaron had been thinking—overthinking, again—the friendship question, but unfortunately his feelings on the subject remained a mystery, even to himself. Sometimes he wanted to talk to Alex, unrestrained, unfiltered, in a way he hadn’t since he was a child. Sometimes he wanted to shoot the man. And sometimes, most alarmingly, he wanted to touch him. Not anything big, just a press of the hand or a light pressure on the shoulder, but what was worrying in a way the talking or murder impulses weren't was that Aaron couldn't seem to actually stop himself from doing it.

Alexander Hamilton never intended to get hooked on drugs when he entered college, but writing papers was the most reliable way he knew to get cash. And the most reliable way to get more work done, well, that was uppers. He was doing his best to tread water, get his own work and everyone else's done along the way when his dealer got spooked and refused to play ball with him anymore.
Aaron Burr was just a sophomore student trying to keep his head down and not draw any attention to himself, a hard thing to do when rooming with Thomas Jefferson's middle man, James Madison.
A goal that became even more impossible when he made the rash decision to help Alex get sober in the wake of being left dealer-less.
