“I’ll shout when I’m back,” Georgie says softly around the door frame. Jon watches her worry the glittery ‘G’ charm on her housekeys between her forefinger and thumb. He wonders if she’s predicting that he’ll be the object of danger, or the agent.
He drops his gaze to his lap, and feels hers attempt to probe through the seaweed-tresses of his damp hair – clean for the first time in weeks.
“I’m okay with it now,” he says quietly. “Knocking.”
“look steph, he doesn’t like knocking and he doesn’t like not being able to see doors and he had a piss poor excuse for a childhood and he doesn’t want me to know more than that and i don’t want to think about it too hard so can you just move the sodding table and let me put the sign in the porch and – oh, hi jon, i thought you weren’t coming down til later –”
She flicks the keyring into her palm.
“I’ll shout.”

Martin barks a rather hysterical laugh.
“Oh no Jon, don’t be silly, why on Earth would I be jealous? Except, of course, for the fact that it took you weeks and a comedown from a panic attack of rather biblical proportions to even look me in the eye, and then the Met Gala gothcore theme made flesh waltzes in and you can barely get your jaw off the floor. And then it turns out that he was your uni fling, which you are clearly not over if the particular hue of your face was anything to go by – Dulux might suggest perhaps ‘russet’– ”
“He was not a uni fling, Martin.” He pinches the bridge of his nose, then splays his fingers out as he qualifies with, “At absolute most it was a queerplatonic situationship.”
Martin splutters.

I've recently been unexpectedly promoted to lead a department in my organisation, wrote the anonymous emailer.
As there was no one working here when I arrived, my manager, who is head of the organisation, had promised me the choice of my own assistants. However, without warning, he simply presented me with an additional assistant. This new assistant’s first act on his first day was to let a dog into the office. It took several hours to catch and clean up after this dog and it has only been downhill from there. I admit I'm not entirely sure what to do with this assistant now I'm stuck with him. I'm hoping you have some advice?

Intercision was a highly taboo topic, so Jon didn't just go around telling people that he and his daemon were severed. No one had believed him at eight when he said that a giant spider had cut them apart; he had applied to work at the Magnus Institute hoping to look for answers, not to make friends, not for anyone to discover that his bond with his daemon was abnormal.
As it turned out, Jon didn't have much of a choice. And the answers he found would tell him more about what fear could do to daemons than he ever could have imagined.

A late night in the archives, weeks after Martin's first encounter with Jane Prentiss. Martin can't sleep; Jon won't sleep. Somehow, they end up having a cup of tea together.
