Summary
Are they forever going to be crashing through each other’s lives like this? They can’t quite seem to converge without a stomach-swerving sort of chaos—not in this world, in this timeline. Certainly not intentionally and mutually, or without shame, regret and shouldn’t haves. So many mistakes that surely didn’t add up to anything worth learning from. Because of course he shouldn’t have slept with Eliot and he shouldn’t look at him either. Not the way he wants to. The way he knows he always has, even when Alice was right there, sharp-eyed and silent, watching Quentin want things he couldn’t have.
Quentin never has been very good at stopping himself from wanting.
Or: Quentin and Eliot have a lot to work out before they can find their way back to one another. And then a whole lot more after that.

Quentin shook out the tension in his hands. He didn’t understand why it wasn’t getting any easier. For days on end he’d been trying to perfect the illumination spell the rest of his fellow First Years had nailed in a matter of hours. But no matter how he tried, Quentin couldn’t seem to make anything more than a spark.
He didn’t know what was worse: that his discipline was apparently shit at magic, or that he’d been placed in the Physical Kids’ Cottage with his ex-whatever-the-hell-they’d-been-in-undergrad because the administration didn’t know what else to do with him. He couldn’t do shit about the latter, but he figured he could at least try and get the basics of magic down before Dean Fogg realized what a grave mistake he’d made in allowing Quentin into Brakebills to begin with.

I had not intended to write a sequel to 'The Grass is Dead, the Gold is Brown', but like... Here I am with Quentin's POV. I don't even have an exact imagined point where this falls, but like I'm already imagining a slight alternate universe in which Quentin and Alice are allowed to just be friends instead of having intensely uncomfortable makeout sessions, so who even knows.
(I cannot be the only person who hates that their whole relationship is the two of them being REALLY BAD at being together while other people loudly talk about their sexual chemistry at them, like they could have had a good relationship as people if TV writers weren't weird about sex)

Summary
Quentin spared one more guilty look at Eliot-then before shuffling his way back toward the stairs. Eliot-now couldn’t blame the little Romeo, even as he felt the sudden rigidness of Eliot-then’s back in his own spine.
“Serves you right,” he muttered, sympathy and pity both failing. He started to turn to leave, the way he should have done (shouldn’t have) earlier. But he was waylaid, once again, when Quentin grabbed hard at the banister, his knees going out from under him for a moment. Eliot moved toward Quentin, at the same time his past self’s head popped up over the back of the armchair.
Neither of them proved necessary. Quentin righted himself on his own. But his eyes darted around the cottage, like he was trying to get his bearings. They looked right through the real Eliot.
The remembered Eliot was a different story, however.
With help from Mayakovsky's spell and a mind palace, Quentin and Eliot (almost) share a final moment before the end.
