Henry blinks his eyes open, unsurprised. He’s panting, they both are, breathing heavily after kissing like they don’t need oxygen to live. Alex is watching him with flushed cheeks and red kissed lips, an unreadable look in his eyes.
“Hey,” he says quietly. “Can we… Can we stop?”
“Yeah,” Henry says immediately, anticipating the question. “Of course, love.”

Henry swallows, reaches up and traces Alex’s cheek with his thumb. “Perfect, love,” he murmurs, then dips his head and pulls Alex into a kiss by the nape of his neck.

Everything is in the same place it was five seconds ago. The polished stones that Henry arranged in a perfect circle; the small flames of the dry leaves Nora lit on fire; the bowl with a liquid suspiciously red that Henry had decided not to ask questions about. But now, in the middle of the circle, with wild curls falling over his eyes, is a boy.
It’s not hard to see he isn’t alive. His eyes don’t shine with the glow of life, his chest doesn’t rise and fall with each inhale and exhale, and there’s that faint, transparent glow to him that all ghosts have, a constant reminder that they don’t belong in this world anymore.
Still, there’s a smile on the boy’s lips that shines brighter than the sun.
“Hi, baby,” Alex says softly, and Henry’s knees threaten to give out. “I didn’t think I’d be seeing you again so soon.”

There’s always a voice in his head, he’d explained once, that tries to dictate how much he needs and wants and should have – or, more often than not, how much he doesn’t need, how much he shouldn’t have.
“It never goes away completely,” Alex had once said, murmured confessions on Henry’s shoulder. “But some days are easier. Some days it’s not as loud.”
Today is not an easier day.
