Henry was hurt, with his many wounds, and he had no place to come home to. But he still had Eleven, or so he hoped.
I.e. Eleven unexpectedly found Henry huddling in the corner of her room, looking painfully helpless.

"You helped me," Eleven said, and there was hate in her voice, ferociously betrayal that would've been considered disturbing for any decent person, except Peter was not technically decent.
"I help you." She put the pressure on his wound, slowing the bleed. At least the voice involuntarily escaped Peter's mouth sounded sincere. At least it wasn't another trick.
After Vecna was defeated, the evidence of the Upside Down — that made him Vecna — left his body, rendering him back to Peter Ballard, 001, Henry Creel, minus the power. Steve believed finishing the job was the right call. Eleven, against her own better judgement, shared different belief and made the decision to spare his life.

Henry threw himself into the crossfire to save Eleven, along with her friends, from the bad guys who tried to kill her. In the end, even with a bullet hole on his body, Henry made it out alive.
The problem didn't end there. As a matter of fact, it started there.

He never asked to smell the same metallic smell and see the same run-down science facility every time he closed his eyes, or feel the same panic he did a year ago when Benrey does something so simple as to steal a fry from him.
But for some reason, Gordon helps him anyway.
Maybe cause he's stubborn. Or curious.
Or maybe because if he can understand Benrey—and forgive him—he can try to put this all behind him. (It's really a mystery.)
