Summary
Both Trinity and Mel are now onstage, a microphone stand in front of each woman. Yolanda is simultaneously sick with envy and excitement, regret and reverence, heartache and hankering.
“I want you to know,” Trinity drawls, each word distinct, like it stands on its own rather than forming part of a sentence. “That I’m happy for you.”
And with that alone, the weight of the song, the meaning of it—all at once, it hits Yolanda.

Summary
After being ditched on the Fourth of July, Trinity Santos copes the only reasonable way; rage-singing at karaoke with Mel King and pretending she’s fine about the whole “keeping it casual” thing with Yolanda Garcia.
Then Garcia texts, offering a ride. Acts normal, while very clearly not being normal at all.
Cue one tense car ride, several pointed observations, and the long-overdue death of “casual.”
Or: jealousy, karaoke, and feelings that refuse to stay theoretical.

Summary
Yolanda turns, already prepared to roll her eyes at Emery’s witty retort, but before she can process what it is, her eyes catch on something, the familiar dark brown hair of a woman she knows very well, visible now that she is erect, able to see above the sea of bodies.
And there her eyes stay.
Because it’s Trinity, sure, of course, but also because she’s swapping spit with some woman, some girl who seems entirely elated by the fact that she’s kissing Trinity Santos—if she even knows her fucking name. Trinity’s hand is in her hair, tugging at the mass of dark curls, and she slides her tongue into the girl’s mouth, and Yolanda wants to scream.

Summary
Trinity Santos doesn't do feelings. It's simple. It's casual. It's exactly what they agreed to.

Summary
Memory can be funny like that. Trinity looks at her and remembers the Yolanda from months ago, sat across from her with a drink in hand, their knees brushing every time one of them leaned in to say something. The dim lighting of the bar had softened her eyes, painting her face into an expression that could almost be mistaken for the same longing that echoed inside Trinity’s chest.
A lot can change in ten months. Not all of it for the better.
Or: It happens in increments, like all the worst things do.

"Okay, what the fuck are we doing here."
"Santos-"
"No, I'm serious." Her voice came out with an edge she hadn't entirely planned for, sharp and tired and real in a way that months of careful management had been preventing. "What is this. What is this, Garcia, because I genuinely need you to explain it to me."...

Summary
"Why don't you go shower while I get dinner started?"
Trinity's mouth opens and for a brief second, nothing comes out. It's not that she doesn't have words. She has too many words, stacked in her throat like plates she's afraid to drop—a series of things she would love to vomit at Yolanda's feet, purging them from her body so that she doesn't have to carry them around anymore. But that's not what she asked. Trinity swallows hard, choking down her desire to be difficult. Now is not the time for complaints. Instead, she forces a weary smile, and hedges, "You don't have to do that."

Summary
The street is littered with green leaves and tiny rosy florets, and in the long summer months, she likes to come home and hang from her knees off the lower branches, even when insects come out and get everywhere. The ordinariness of the building of it is what made her choose it; walls covered in mosses and too many motorcycles out front, a short linen couch where she can watch her shitty shows once a week.
This house was the only thing she ever used her court settlement money on.
Trinity takes the stone stairs two at a time, her hand on her house keys. “I live on the third floor,” she says, by way of explanation, as she turns over a shoulder.
Yolanda is framed in the florets as she makes her way up; she is only in a cream tank, which stands out on the smooth brown of her skin. “I like it,” she says, in that same ever even tone. “I think I might like it more on the inside.”
(or. in a long summer, they finally get together. well, sort of.)

The heavy heat of another body presses against her spine. She shifts slightly, and then goes still as soon as the arm draped across her stomach registers.
Trinity is still here.

Summary
Dr. Trinity Santos and Dr. Yolanda Garcia have a system. The system works. They blow off steam together, rarely stay the night. They argue about the coffee maker in the morning before work. The system is fine. Until it isn't fine anymore. It isn't enough, and it takes a significantly dangerous event for either of them to admit otherwise.

Trinity has her hand inside of a patient, and a bomb tightly tucked in her grip.
Her palm is soaked in sweat, a sticky ecosystem maturing rapidly beneath the tight latex of her gloves, and her heart is thundering so hard that she’s surprised Dennis hasn’t felt it yet from where he’s standing across the operating table.

Summary
“Pupils are responsive,” Al-Hashimi offers quietly, “but tachycardia and clammy skin suggest—”
“Exhaustion,” Garcia finishes for her, then Santos feels two familiar hands scoop up one of her own and begin to gently massage her fingers and palm. “Trinity, if you can feel me, squeeze my hand.”
Santos swears it takes about as long as her commute to work, but she manages to find her shoulder and then her elbow and then her wrist and then the part of her that Garcia’s holding, and somehow convinces her fingers to curl slowly inward.
There’s an audible sigh of relief alongside the continued warmth enveloping her knuckles.
“Give me twenty minutes,” Garcia says, then leans down close enough that Santos can feel hot breath around her ear. “I’m gonna bring you somewhere quiet, okay?”

Summary
“Look… I’m offering,” Santos doubles down. “I can drive you home. It’s really not a big deal. No problema.”
That earns a breathless, barely-there laugh from Garcia for some reason, and after a visible deep breath in and out she shifts onto her back to look at Santos, and her cheeks are wet.
“Shit,” Santos mutters,”how long have you been stuck in here?”
“Not long enough, apparently.” Garcia hesitates again before wincing through a wave of pain. “It’ll pass. I’ll be fine.”
But Santos just gives her a look. “Seriously, what's the point of lying to me when you could just let me help?”
Garcia sort of rolls her eyes, but they’re bloodshot and too glassy and the next blink releases a tear that she quickly swipes away.
(They haven't spoken since the Langdon incident, and now Garcia's having a migraine attack, and it turns out they didn't completely destroy whatever This is.)

Summary
“I know you mentioned a raincheck,” Santos begins, and then she gets a little lost.
(She has the next words ready.
She’s been practicing them in her head for the last few minutes.
Still, they’re caught in her throat like a sip of water going down the wrong pipe.)
But Garcia is patient.
So unbelievably fucking patient.
"But I don’t—want to be alone,” Santos admits with a slight grimace, trying to sound chill and casual even though this isn’t chill and casual at all. But her voice comes out audibly strained because that was just enough of a lie to make her squeeze her eyes shut and bite her bottom lip way too hard. “I probably shouldn’t be alone tonight,” she corrects with what little air is left in her lungs.
“Okay,” Garcia says, simple and gentle and effortless, and nods toward the passenger side. “Get in.”
