Summary
She might not be dating Peter, might be sleeping with him but it’s different, now.
Different than it had been when they were kids who really didn’t know what they were doing and very different from when they were in college, so deeply intertwined with each other that when they finally broke up, it was like coming up for air.
He’s her best friend now, deeply and truly– the first person she thinks to call when she’s had a shit day and the one she wants to talk to when something goes great.
But it’s different– different between the two of them not just because of their own lives and experiences, but different expectations.
She doesn’t want a relationship right now and for what she thinks is the first time in her life, she believes Peter when he says he doesn’t want one either.

“It’s just a little thing for fun,” MJ says, dabbing away the laughter induced tears from the corner of her eyes.
“Fun? I’m a little…rat man!” he exclaims, shoving the image towards her as if she hasn’t seen it before.
“Now, that’s not true.” MJ tuts, shaking her head. “You’re our little rat man."

She looks down at their joined hands, her wedding ring glinting in the light. He squeezes her hand and it feels like he’s squeezing her heart, like he’s saying I’m here, I hear you.
