Summary
Jayce doesn’t realize how shitty he feels until Mel collapses into his arms and he can’t support her weight—his knee buckles underneath him, and its all he can do to drag her closer to him to protect her from the hard floor of the council’s chambers as they fall.
Mel only seems half-conscious, shaking in his arms as he lifts one hand from her side to cradle the back of her head. “We’re okay,” he murmurs, shifting both knees underneath him despite the way his leg screams in agony; he pulls her into his lap and against his chest. His voice is rough and strained, more a wheeze than anything else. Jayce can still feel metal fingers wrapped around his neck, around his wrist. “It’s okay. You’re okay."

Jayce sat on her couch, his leg stretched out awkwardly to accommodate the brace that ran from mid-thigh to ankle. The polished metal glinted in the soft glow of the Christmas tree, the faint clicking of the adjustable straps filling the silence as he adjusted its fit.
Mel watched him from across the room, her arms folded, a glass of mulled wine in her hand. She’d been staring for too long, she realized, long enough that he noticed.
“You’re burning a hole in me, Mel,” Jayce teased, though his voice lacked the usual warmth.
