Dennis stills at that, giving him that same, blank look from before. Robby wants to shut his eyes. He never wants to see it again.
He tilts his head. “Accident?”
“You were—” Robby says, and doesn’t miss the desperation in his own voice. “I just told you. You were in an accident. Don’t you remember?”After an argument about Robby’s resignation from the Pitt, Dennis gets into a car crash that makes him unable to retain short-term memories. Including the fight they just had, and Robby’s imminent departure. It’s up to Robby to nurse him back to health, and choose which truth to tell him.
Or, Dennis gets anterograde amnesia.

Dennis laughed softly, shaking his head a little bit at the question. He takes another sip from his tea, letting the hot liquid run down his throat soothingly. It grounds him. Being alone with Robby always had his heart pounding. “I try…but I’m pretty busy, you know?” He shrugged. “It’s okay…one day I’ll have all the time in the world to relax.”
“Don’t get me started,” Robby chuckled, shaking his head a little. “What do you do to relax, Dennis?”

He can't taste, can't feel, can't stop his off-the-books investigation into underground surgeons removing failed Red Ring implants. Every back-alley beating, every late-night break-in is just him chasing pain to cut through the numbness. To feel alive again.
