I know what this is.
Looking back on it, the hints were simple. They were there. They simply didn’t register on the youngness of her mind. It had not been that long ago that she had been born. Since she had been born, she had always had the same people around her- the same individuals that she sought for survival. Kanade needed said people to survive, and though she couldn’t put her words on it, she put her everyday obsessions into it.
When they were gone, it was as if free-fall had come to claim her. With no grip on reality, no anchor to hold onto, with no confidence to set her feet upon, it was the uneasiness of having no guide in her life, no idea of what she wanted to do. It was for no one to tell her, ‘go on.'
Just that, back then…
She knew where she'd land.
She knew that she'd have her mother to land. And, if not for that, her father to land. Kanade, at least back then, knew her anchors. She knew, too, that she could land on them. The concept of landing on them was foreign. Though they were her parents-
They weren't even around anymore.

Even Mizuki, from time to time, sought Kanade for assistance. It was her nature. She wanted to help people, wanted to care for them, wanted to shelter them, wanted to protect them. This was her nature, and though it was exhausting, she was very well cared for. She knew all of Nightcord loved her, she knew that Honami cared for her, and she knew that they needed her. For all intents and purposes, Yoisaki Kanade was special, specially cherished.
And yet she still wanted to cry.
There was a reason why Yoisaki Kanade took action when her fellows didn’t, why she was the effective head of their band, why she praised so readily and smiled so easily when it was for the sake of others. There was a reason, plain and simple and effective and written into her soul, why Mafuyu knew to take refuge in her home, why Ena sought her words, why everything and everything sought her.
Kanade wanted Mafuyu’s fingers to fill the gaps in between her own, and she wondered why, because they had not known each other for nearly long enough. A beat or so after she had thought that, the answer lied in front of her.
“I find that things here, in your home, are… barely not broken.”

An asteroid heralding the end of days is on a collision course with Earth. It brings with it skepticism and confusion as it streaks across space, targeting the planet like a fired bullet. In a last-ditch effort to survive the impact, the members of Nightcord at 25:00 flee to the Empty Sekai, where through the development of Mafuyu’s emotional state and the influence her friends have had on her, it is able to barely sustain the group’s physical needs.
The same cannot be said for their mental needs.
Inspired by the song Netsu Ijou / Heat Abnormal by Iyowa.

What makes me stand out in any of this? Wanting to work hard to match even a tenth of all of your talent? Ugh. That just means that the thing that makes me special is that I'm not special.”
“Hear me out. Kanade and Mafuyu have so much talent, that much I agree with you on. But look at what they do with it. All Kanade does is write music. She writes good music, great music even, but she thinks that that's all she can ever do. She's crammed herself into this little music box, composing to try and save people when that isn't even realistic, and she can't get out of it until she realizes that she's the one who put herself in there to begin with.

Kanade has an inkling she'll probably die young like her mother, but she doesn’t mind. She just needs enough time to fulfill her cursed promise with Mafuyu and compose that song that is capable of saving her. Unfortunately, fate decided it would be hilarious to inflict her with the Hanahaki Disease, leaving her on the verge of death much earlier than even she anticipated. Of course, she hid the fact from everyone and chose to face death all alone.
“Liar.”
A few months later, with a comatose Kanade destined to never wake up, Mafuyu is left to pick up the broken pieces. With Ena and Mizuki, they follow her supposed savior's trail to solve the mystery behind her inevitable demise and hopefully find a way to salvage her life... even if they have to fall down the rabbit hole.
“... Didn't you promise? You’re a cruel girl, Kanade."
