“I know she does.” Elora let out a sigh— soft, but loud enough to carry. “But she isn’t… I don’t know how many new mothers you’ve seen, but this isn’t just her adjusting.”
The words slithered under Mel’s skin, digging deeper and deeper still. She wanted to claw them out— she wanted to scream. A whimper rose in her throat instead, and she even choked that back, reducing it to a garbled, pathetic gasp that made her humiliation burn hotter.
“What do you propose that we do, then?” Viktor asked.
Mel had the same question, herself.

“I’ve noticed. It’s concerning.” For as dry as his tone might have been, he still managed a smile when he looked at their daughter.

Mel’s eyes sweep over her breakfast with feigned surprise and genuine appreciation. Strawberry jam spread over a thin pancake in the shape of a heart, toast with the crust cut off, two fried eggs, and a steaming cup of tea.
“It’s perfect,” she says with a shaking voice and a wavering smile, and reaches out to pull the tray closer. “Thank you.”
Her husband’s cooking has improved considerably, something that she credits him for with a quick kiss. Chaste as it may be, it still prompts a loud gagging sound from Celia.

“You two would give me the world.” She skims light fingers across Viktor’s cheek, his sharp cheekbones pressing into her touch as he exhales shakily.
“We would be amenable to giving you much more than that, Councillor.” Viktor murmurs into her touch, his lips meeting her palm this time, pressing another chaste kiss to her.

Viktor was terrible with this sort of thing: emotions, deep conversations, anything that couldn’t be distilled down to predictable, logical sequences. He knew that about himself, and had come to accept it. Somehow, though, that knowledge hadn’t prepared him to deal with the reality of the pained, furious look that took over Mel’s face all at once.
“Fine,” she spat, jerking away from him and stumbling to her feet. “If you don’t want me, I’ll find someone who does.”
