James settled an arm over Steve's shoulders, looking more relaxed now. "You two out enjoying the end of the semester? I'm sure Joker's kicking this pop stand soon as he can."
Kaidan stiffened slightly, and the smile on his face turned fixed. Joker fidgeted, since James wasn't wrong, but the way he put it didn't feel quite right either. "Eh, I'm not going for a while yet," he said, which still felt like a lie.
"Wait," James said, appearing to barely hear him. He squinted at Kaidan, then glanced around as if they might be overheard and dropped his voice. "Are you guys hunting ghosts?"
Kaidan brightened, any trace of sadness disappearing like clouds in a summer sky. "Yeah, how'd you guess?"
James shifted uncomfortably, but Steve beamed at them both. "James is obsessed with your show. Hasn't he ever told you?"
"I had no idea! Are you a believer, James?"
"Yeah, but--" James glanced around one more time, then grimaced. "I just don't think you should mess with that stuff, man. You never know who's listening."
"Kaidan's always respectful," Steve said.
"And it's not like he's found anything substantial. I would know. I've been on every single trip," said Joker dryly.

“Have to admit though,” Shepard says, swallowing the rest of his shot, “I’ve been called a lot worse things than your boyfriend.”
Kaidan blinks. The whiskey’s definitely caught up to him. It’s warm in here, and he has to have imagined what just came out of Shepard’s mouth. “Really.”
“Compared to getting shot at and having an inquest shoved up my ass? I’m pretty sure holding your hand, going home with you and eating your mom’s risotto is a considerable improvement, yes.”
Kaidan laughs. Or tries to. It comes out as more of a hoarse squawk. “Sure, I’ll just avoid this whole mess by bringing you home with me. They’ll never have to know.”
“Maybe they don’t,” Shepard says, and Kaidan nearly chokes.
