Rook scoffs, but her eyes don’t leave the stall. She reaches a hand out to delicately touch a silk ribbon but snatches her hand away as if it burns. “Can you imagine me, stomping through battlefields with a ribbon in my hair? I’d look absurd.”
“You’d look like yourself,” he counters before he can stop himself. “And that’s anything but absurd. It would be beautiful.”

She screamed his name. It is the last thing he remembers. He does not remember pulling her into his arms, though he must have. He must have kissed her within an inch of her life, because there was no other way that he would have celebrated their victory. It was a victory, wasn’t it?
“Taash,” he says lowly, raising his haunted eyes to meet theirs. They have never been very good at concealing their emotions and from their grief he knows the answer to the question he asks anyway. “Where is Rook?”
