“I heard there would be a witch trial,” he said, watching Jihoon closely for a reaction. “Word reached Maplebridge. I’m a writer, I came to Willowwood to find out the truth.”
He hoped that was enough. That the honesty in his voice would convince Jihoon he wasn’t here to mock or accuse, or to play the same fearful game the townsfolk did. He wasn’t carrying pitchforks and salt. Only paper, ink, and questions.
Jihoon took another step forward.“And what truth,” he asked softly, “do you want to know?”
The question hung in the air between them, heavier than it should have been. The dim torchlight wavered against the walls of the cellar, casting long shadows on Jihoon’s figure, who now stood almost toe-to-toe with the iron bars. His expression remained unreadable, his voice calm, but the weight of his gaze was something Seungcheol could feel.
Seungcheol hesitated before speaking. There was no way to phrase it gently. “If… it’s true that the person on trial is really a witch.”

Jihoon does not trust his voice to come out acquiescing, but he manages a smile and a nod, which seems to be all the deference Mr Jeon wants or expects from him at this juncture.
There will be plenty of time to question the need for such silly rules later, once he’s more settled. No sense in creating a stir on his first day!
