Jin and Lucia run away from the destroyed city of the Dragon's Egg, escaping from the danger within. They manage to find refuge in a small abandoned house, far from everything else. The calmness surrounding them means that they both have some time to think about their days.
The heaviness gets to them.

The walls stalked closer, pressed red into the corners of his vision; every inhale pulled fever-hot air into his lungs, cloying and rank as beast breath. Something stirred by the door, watching him. Breathing. The taste of copper and stale meat on his tongue. Breathing, snarling exhales by the door, louder and louder still.
OR
After the horned primate hunt, Everett can’t shake a gnawing sense of guilt and doubt. He decides to process these feelings like a man: by going outside and killing something with his bare hands. This goes about as well as you’d expect.

Summary
He was damp with sweat all over, his breath scorching in his lungs, and all that would’ve been fine, he could handle himself just fine, had his opponent not been twice his size. The ship swayed with the weight of them and their companions, each focused on a different member of the crew, because sure, it was only gold they wanted, but gods knew the Riptide pirates did not let themselves get fucked over that easy.
So, battle it was. And they were fucking losing.
“Gryffon,” Gillion called out from across the deck, sounding equally as winded. “It is your fucking destiny to get these guys off the ship, do you hear me? That is an order.”
Gryffon gave no indication that he’d heard him. He didn’t have the breath to.

Their creations, half-baked and unsung as they were, lived on in him. Deliberately or not. Their curse had doomed them to a life of halves, fractions, portions, and yet Gryffon hummed their songs like they had an ending, like he was simply repeating his favourite parts as they were stuck in his head.
They would never sing before an audience again, and yet Gryffon knew all their works by heart the way people used to. They’d never feel the satisfaction of a finished song again, would never get to pick the best ones for the occasion from a near endless repertoire, and yet Gryffon softened whenever he heard them play, like it soothed something deep in his bones. Entire towns used to know their name, their face, would treat them to ale on the house in exchange for a night of merry tunes, and losing all that, their purpose in life, their soul’s truest calling, that’d devastated them, and yet—
And yet, Gryffon tapped his fingers and bobbed his head and smiled like they’d never seen in those brief moments before he became aware of their presence and his lips turned pink.

Inspecting the little memory they had left of themself before the curse, she was never able to parse out an urge to pray or a devotion stronger than they had to their music. They couldn’t remember stepping into a church, or reading scriptures, or holding religious ceremonies. All knowledge they had of the Goddesses came from Gillion, and his constant prattling about his “Moon Mommy”.

Gryffon always took second watch. He preferred not having to wake up just before the morning, like he would have to with third or fourth watch. It was easier that way, to not have to force himself awake after practically no sleep. And the captains always took first, so he never wanted to infringe on their crucial time together. He didn’t have to be awake through those first three hours of their shift, technically, but he loved the moments where he could hear the water crashing against the side of the boat, lulling everyone else to sleep. He didn’t want to waste them. Instead he just stared at the ceiling, felt the gentle rocking of the ship beneath him and let his mind wander. The stars above him when he finally got to sit on the deck and stare out at the ocean around him were etherial. They twinkled and gleamed over his head like each and every wave in the massive sea, and he just couldn’t help feeling at peace. Everything about his time alone was just that. Peaceful.
He barely noticed when Queen began taking the second watch with him.

“I’ve actually been enjoying myself greatly,” Jay responded, crossing one leg over the other.
“Humor me,” Chip wrinkled his nose, holding out his hand dramatically.
With a small huff and a roll of her eyes (only to hide the smile that was steadily growing across her face), Jay reached out, placing her hand in Chip’s upturned palm.

Fingers entered his hair and carded through it, gently ruffling the curls. “Can you tell me why?”
She spoke with nothing but care and consideration for him, Gill reminded himself of that as he took a deep breath in. “I’m nervous I’m going to mess up the whole……physical affection thing. I wonder if I’m going to mess up one of your customs or make you uncomfortable. I want to take your breath away in the same way you steal mine.”

Gently, he put two cold fingers to Chip’s wrist. It was extremely hard to tell if there was any heartbeat over the sound of his own frantic one pounding in his ears. Sighing shakily, Gillion moved his hand up to Chip’s neck. Please be alive, please be alive.
After a moment, he felt it. The beat of Chip’s heart was quick but steady, though not any quicker than normal since the “transplant” he’d received. He was okay. Gillion sighed once more, regaining a steadiness to his own breath.
Even so, he couldn’t bring himself to draw his hand away.

And yeah, Ollie misses his mom and he isn't not looking forward to going back to Canella, but the urgency with which Chip is speaking about getting him home, and how they should've brought him back sooner, hurts. A lot, actually. If he didn't know any better, he might think the Riptide Pirates were trying to dump him on Canella and run back off so they could have actual pirate fun without a kid and responsibilities bogging them down.
Or
Ollie overhears Jay and Chip talking about how they need to get him home. He assumes they want him gone because they don’t like him, and tries to take a rowboat out to save them a journey and go back to Canella himself. It ends about as well as you’d think.

“Yeah, it wasn’t too comfortable happening the first time,” Chip joked, hiding the fear in his tone. “You ever get your heart pulled out of your mouth? Wasn't super fun.”
“I can imagine.”
Chip needed a resurrection, a true resurrection, and quickly if he wanted to live with any memory of himself. And luckily for his crew, they were able to find someone willing to do it. But resurrections have never been very easy on the body.

Was it Maxwell? I told you not to listen to anything that he said, he’s just an asshole.”
