Summary
In hindsight, he should’ve predicted Gillion’s next actions a lot better. Gillion’s grip on Chip’s hand tightened and he saw the way that his ears folded back towards his head.
Forgetting that not everyone could breathe underwater, Gillion dove down, taking Chip with him who hadn’t expected that, and got a mouthful of lake water.
--
The crew stop at an island to restock and Chip and Gillion go swimming for a bit. Gillion forgets not everyone can breathe underwater like him.

Summary
Before she could get any closer, the lid of the barrel shifted and the whole thing wobbled some. Jay furrowed her eyebrows and squinted, trying to decide if she was just seeing things in the darkness.
Was she just overreacting about all this? It was the middle of the night, after all, Gillion was probably just shifting around.
Then, the barrel toppled, the lid skittered across the floor and the water in it splashed everywhere. Gillion spilled out of the water like a wet rag, his claws scraping against the wood. He coughed, his entire body shaking and lurching.

He hadn’t meant to snap at her like that but Jay didn’t seem to react to it. She sighed and watched him walk away from the wheel.
But Chip didn’t manage to get very far. The sudden movement caused his head to spin and the wind knocked what little breath that he had out of his lungs. Jay called something after him but the words fell on deaf ears.
Everything seemed to go blurry for a second as Chip’s chest heaved with the strain of his bindings. The next thing Chip knew he woke up on one of the cots in their sleeping quarters.

“Well, since it’s not needed,” Chip’s tone was firm, “because you’re supposed to be sleeping still. Why don’t you come join in the cuddle pile?”
“The what?”
Chip pulled back the curtain, dragging Gillion into the square by the hand. Gillion looked nervous, his eyebrows furrowed and his face contorted into a slight grimace.
“I—” Gillion pulled his hand away from Chip, his ears drooped, pinning back against his head, “I wouldn’t want to intrude on what is going on here. This is not at all involving me.”

Summary
There was a tear in his shirt.
It was a large, three grouped tear from the claws of the last beast that the group had come across and had to defeat. At the time, Gillion hadn’t even bothered to care about the rip that now adorned his shirt since he had been bleeding and trying not to pass out from the pain.
But now that they were back on the ship and sailing across the bright blue ocean, it seemed improper to wear the ruined shirt. Which served as a problem, since the only other shirt that he owned ended up being his pajamas (which he only wore when sleeping in a bed).

Jay wasn’t one to nest.
She had long outgrown the silly habit a few years before she ran away from home. And since then, she’d never felt the urge to make a nest, fill it with the things that she loved and huddle up in the warmth for a while.
Jay hadn’t indulged in something like that for…
She can’t even remember how long it's been.

Summary
Gillion had disappeared below the surface. A few seconds later, out popped his head, staring at Jay with the same puppy-dog-eyed expression. His ears twitched and the fins shifted.
“I’m coming,” she held her hands up in front of her chest in a placating gesture, shuffling closer to the lake. She shivered as she stepped into the water, a jolt of cold water against her skin.

“Looks like the clownfish got in again,” Eden said, bringing her hand up to her mouth to hide her chuckles.
Gillion’s mouth hung open slightly as he processed what she had said. Then he gave her a small, tired smile, reaching up to tug at a strand of his hair.
“I even made sure the door was closed and everything,” Gillion responded, rubbing his face.

Summary
However, as she glanced at Gillion’s water barrel, she noticed that the lid was firmly shut. There were a few drops that spilled over the edge here and there when the water sloshed around inside.
Usually, Gillion kept the lid closed when he was inside. Jay stepped over a puddle of water and approached the barrel. She knocked on the top of the lid and waited to see what would happen.

Summary
Early mornings on the Albatross could be practically considered a different dimension. Where the sun is only just beginning to rise and the sleeping quarters are still dark with the void of dawn. Where the normally loud, and boisterous crew slept silently. Where a single whisper could be considered louder than a shout. An impossible vertex of quiet and calm.
He never sees these types of moments. But something has woken him up and he finds himself blinking up at the ceiling, listening to the sounds of the waves.
Even those sound different.

Summary
SPOILERS FOR EPISODE 57 OF JRWI
They had known Gillion had a sister, as he mentioned her occasionally in passing conversation but never many details. He didn’t talk much about his life in the undersea, or his family. But Eden, he had mentioned with a sad fondness.
Chip had no idea what to expect of Eden from the stories Gillion told, but this certainly wasn’t it. The resemblance the two of them had to each other was almost uncanny and there was no doubt in his mind that they were related.

Gillion tensed, another shock coursing through his veins, he sucked in a sharp breath, his gills flexing. His hands were shaking and wrapped his arms around himself, digging his claws into his skin to keep his muscles from twitching.

“Does…” Jay hesitated, her eyes widened, “does the lightning… mess with your magic?”
Gillion forced a jerky nod, squeezing his eyes shut.

Summary
The next few times that he had shown up in the tavern, Jay had no idea why she had even noticed him. He could blend in with every other brown-haired man that came into this tavern, but he had an aura about him. The aura of someone that was going to cause trouble, and that made her nervous.
He sat at the bar when there were stools available. He had a drink, or maybe even a few of the same type of whisky. And then he would leave.
Jay would notice him looking at her a few times, his eyebrows slightly furrowed like he wanted to say something, but Jay never got close enough to give him a chance.

Summary
Gillion shoved open the door, hitting his shoulder on the doorframe as he entered. He was never one for a quiet, sneaky entrance.
Held in his hand, Gillion had a large fish of an unknown species gripped by the tail in a tight clawed grasp. It was practically the size of Gillion’s torso as he displayed it with little struggle. The thing squirmed and flicked in the air, bulging eyes wide as its gills flexed and its mouth gaped. It was a relatively grotesque sight that Chip figured Gillion would’ve been more upset at seeing.

Summary
Chip’s skin was coated in this viscous, sticky substance making it hard for him to get his traction as he tried to stand, gripping the railing of the ship like his life depended on it. It was as if he had just been rolling around in dead fish (not that he would ever do that willingly).
But the stench was almost unbearable, making him gag. As he brought his hand up to his mouth, he realized that his hands were also covered in it. Which made him gag again.

She’d come back any time now to come get him. He’d hold onto her, her large calloused hand encasing his small, fragile ones. The fabric of her skirts ruffled and scrunched. It was rough and scratchy and he didn’t like it very much. But it was her and she was safe and she would be there eventually.

EPISODE 53 SPOILERS
“I believe they deserve some discipline,” Jayson continues, “for taking you away from your home. Don’t you think?”Jay can hear the thrumming of her own heartbeat in her ears. It practically seems to echo in the dark room and she finds herself trembling. Her father is staring at her, bright, glowing eyes boring into her skull.
“Discipline them.”

Summary
The sword skittered across the deck a few feet away and Chip swung out his leg, hitting Gillion in the ankles and sending him sprawling on the deck with a loud thud. Gillion made a noise of surprise, almost a gasp of sorts as he was knocked flat on his back.
Chip stood over Gillion, the tip of his sword angled towards Gillion’s throat. A cocky smile spread across his face as he licked his lips, sweat dripping down his forehead.
“I think this counts me as the winner,” Chip said, his hands shaking with the exhaustion that seemed to drip from his form, “what do you think?”

Summary
The handle of a small knife was extended out to him from a steady, webbed hand. Blurry faces and stone-cold expressions were the only things that greeted him as he looked away from the offered blade.
“You know what to do,” a voice said, reverberating through the cold water, “do it.”
Gillion reached out with shaking hands and took the handle of the knife. It was made of obsidian, sharpened to a thin point that could easily split skin. The handle was encrusted with shells and decorated with other small corals. It felt impossibly heavy as he gripped it tight.
--
Gillion's training began when he was incredibly young, the result of those lessons stick with him.
