When Sam became a social worker, he had known to expect days that left him feeling one second away from giving up/ And those days had come, left him feeling like a broken cog working overtime in an even more broken machine.
The weight of it all was to be expected, but it was worth it when he placed kids in families that made them smile genuinely for the first time in years. He learned to look forward to those little moments of brightness, little perfect gifts that made him forget how his eyebags were getting darker, how his hair was starting to thin years before his father’s had. He kept all those golden moments in his heart and thank you notes above his computer screen.

So he didn't quite understand why Father's Day mattered now. As far as Sam knew, Tommy never had a dad, and Sam's father had been dead for years at this point.

It is not a baby creeper; paws big and clumsy, teeth sharp even at a young age.
He sees a bright red flank with splotches of white. Long legs and hooves, flung bedraggled to the side. Wilting petals; blossoms curled from the cold.
A human torso and head. Golden curls, wreathed in more flowers; a laurel crown. Eyes as blue as a clear summer sky.
Sam’s breath hitches, and he takes a step back, a paw raised in confusion as he stares down at a shivering moobloom centaur.

He turned around, setting himself to go back.
A small sound took him out of his thoughts, it was followed by a screech and squawks.
Something fell over with an empty thud by his left, behind the bushes nearby. His ears flickered at the sound.
Slowly and carefully he approached the source of the sound.
There was a bird, trashing in the ground, fighting against a net while it had - an arrow. An arrow was piercing its wing.

“I’m not scared,” Dream says quietly, looking Punz straight in the eyes. Punz’s blue eyes sharpen, completely focused on Dream, and Dream feels his heart pounding in his ears, very aware that Punz is still holding his wrist—holding Dream’s heart in his hands.
Or; Dream and Punz coordinate costumes for Halloween, but things don't go as planned.

Tommy's eyes flit over to him. Techno expects him to wave, to drift over, to let relief wash over his expression- seeing them as his respite from anything else he has to face. But no, that doesn't happen. Tommy casts his eyes over the lot of them and there isn't a single moment of recognition. No light, no relief. He looks even further confused, actually, with the way that his brow furrows.
"Tommy?" Techno says again, but Tommy turns forward, continuing his walk like they mean nothing to him. Like Techno means nothing to him.

Sam had never been particularly close to Tommy before Dream’s imprisonment. He was much more comfortable around Tubbo, because Tubbo knew redstone and building: he understood Tubbo.
But then Sam’s view of the blonde was turned on its head as they started to work on the hotel together. The more he learned, the more Sam promised himself he’d step in and be the father figure that the kid deserved: he just didn’t know how to go about actually telling him that.
It’s a good thing that Tommy opened up on his own.
