Faye cleared her throat and his attention snapped back to her. She held her hand out to him and her gaze had a questioning look to it, as if asking permission. He nodded again and, softly, she took his hand in one of hers and placed the fingers of her other over his arm. Logan inhaled sharply. His burnt skin was tender and sensitive, and her fingertips were cold against it. No, not cold, his body was simply still so hot. Faye applied a gentle touch, tracing her fingers over the tapestry of burns along his arm. The friction sent arcs of electricity through him and was coupled with a strange feeling. It was an odd sensation, a tingling that was like the opposite of goosebumps. Looking down at his arm, he saw why. Skin burnt black regaining their color…

Descending deeper into the estate’s halls only painted more bleak a picture. Bodies decorated every wall, every inch of the floor; the house was choked with a litany of corpses. Some were horrifically mangled, limbs contorted at gruesome angles. Others were left well enough that a fool might think them only asleep. If not for the blood. They all were covered in blood; some of them bled blue. She kept her gaze straight ahead, resolving not to look down. Afraid to look down. Afraid she might recognize their faces. Some of the bodies were so small.

As Melina looked, she caught a glimpse of movement. Did someone still live? No. She looked more closely and saw it for what it was, a specter. From out behind trees and emerging through closed doors, specters roamed the abandoned village. Faint figures, akin to ghosts, of all shapes and sizes. Adults in conversation, children at play, some even looked to be picking flowers. Why was she seeing this? Why did her heart ache from being in this place?

He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a photograph. He held it gently, as if it were as fragile as thin glass, and turned it over in his hands. Three faces met his own. One a woman red of hair, eyes closed and head tilted to let the magic of the moment wash over her. One a young man, hair gold like the sun and hanging almost to his shoulders and his head turned to the side with a grin that he aimed at the woman. And the last, another man of an age with the first, hair like the black of night with a face that was a mockery of his own, or his mockery of theirs, more like.
