2024 Haiku Writing Month Poems

Summary:

A collection of all the haiku that I wrote for Haiku Writing Month 2024.

Notes:

(See the end of the work for notes.)

Work Text:

Mistrust

There’s a shady guy
Silently standing right there.
I do not trust him.

Frog

A frog catches flies
And hops on the lily pads.
He enjoys his life.

In Memoriam

I pour out a cup
And dedicate this to you,
O sweet froggy prince.

Train

Traveling the tracks,
Carrying people and freight.
We must stay on time!

Stars

Balls of burning gas
Across the whole galaxy.
They’re so far away.

Coffee

A nice and warm drink
To help get me through the day.
Helps keep me awake.

Knocking

I can hear someone
Knocking loudly at my door.
Now, who could it be?

Blue Sky

A bright, sunny day
After days of dull grey skies.
It is blue once more.

Glistening Snow

The white snow glistens
On evergreen tree branches.
It’s decorative.

Refundables

Taking cans and bottles
To the recycle depot.
The car is filled up.

Blinding Snow

The snow fills the air
And obscures my line of sight.
It is dangerous.

Bookshelf

Books sit on the shelf.
They wait for me to read them.
I’ll do it one day.

Cheesecake

Delicious cheesecake,
The sweet taste upon my tongue
Is so delightful.

Harsh Discipline

The school prefect is
Administering beatings
To the rulebreakers.

Sunlight

Radiant sunlight
Shining right through my window
Helps brighten my day.

Tuxedo

A fancy bow tie
With a dress shirt and jacket
Makes one look classy.

Uncertain

I am not sure what
Type of haiku that I should
Be writing about.

Organ

The air blows through pipes
As I press down on the keys,
Makes a lovely sound.

Symphonic Metal

Classical music
Combined with a heavy sound,
My favourite style.

Keys

I can’t find my keys.
I wonder where I put them.
They’re always hiding.

Rain on Snow

Rain on top of snow
With freezing temperatures
Makes things dangerous.

Sunset

The sun is setting,
Creating a golden glow
On the surroundings.

Full Moon

The full moon glows bright,
Filling the night sky with a
Shining silver light.

Raincoat

Keeping my clothes dry
As I walk down the sidewalk
In the pouring rain.

Hammer

Hammering a nail
To hang something on the wall.
Ow! I hit my thumb!

Science Experiments

Performing science
Experiments on people.
They’re very painful.

Cavities

Just look at these teeth!
They are full of cavities!
I will have to drill.

Downpour

The sky opens up
And unleashes a torrent
Of rain down on us.

Leap Year

Once, every four years,
The month of February
Gets one extra day.

Notes:

Extra notes and details on some of these haiku:

'Frog' and 'Sunlight' were written for prompts for a haiku group. 'Frog' was also a theme inspired by an active member of the literature community on DeviantArt who unfortunately had passed away the previous autumn. He really liked frogs and often had a frog theme in his works.

'In Memoriam' was a haiku that I wrote that was also dedicated to said deceased person.

'Mistrust', 'Knocking', 'Uncertain', 'Keys', and 'Leap Year' were all written for weekly prompts in a poetry group.

'Train' was written for a prompt from another writing group.

'Harsh Discipline' was inspired by the character Kyoya Hibari from the series Katekyou Hitman Reborn. It was also inspired by my own character Alex Redstone who was also partly inspired in his character type by Hibari. So far, Alex has not appeared in any stories that I've written but did originally appear in some school-themed RPs on Gaia Online where he was the harsh and unforgiving disciplinary committee leader.

'Science Experiments' is based on my character William Vanderhausen who likes to use people, usually other students, as test subjects for his experiments. A running gag is that his experiments turn out to be very painful for the test subject.

'Cavities' is my apparently obligatory dentist-themed poem for the writing month challenge. I always wind up writing at least one of those. Hopefully, for the patient, the dentist isn't Dr. Timothy Klausmann (another character of mine).

Other haiku were inspired by the weather or certain events happening at the time.
