    Red wine always makes him tipsier than usual and he finds himself saying, the words slurring a bit. “You know, I’ve got to ask. Do you always shoot cabbies for people you barely you know?”

    John meets his gaze over the rim of his glass, and there’s something there that Sherlock can’t pin down. “Not for everyone,” he says, meaningfully, pointedly, his smile all teeth.

    Sherlock feels faint. He’s flirting. Is he? Sherlock has to backpedal, get out of the hole he’s dug himself into.

    “You should come home with me tonight,” Oh god no, that’s the exact opposite of what he should be doing.

    John’s eyes widen and he blinks at him. “Er-“

    “I mean, 221B’s closer, it’s late,” he scrambles for words.  “And you’ll be staying there anyway. I mean- well, I’m assuming. Ms Hudson’s already put up the bed-“ Christ, he’s not being clever and sexy at all, he’s blabbering like an idiot-

    Mycroft was seven when Mummy brought home his new baby brother. Big Brother was a new role for him, and he was determined to be perfect at it. Mummy arranged the baby on his lap. Mycroft had read that babies so young couldn't really see, but this baby's gaze seemed sharp. Something about it seemed to demand an introduction, so Mycroft decided to comply.
    "Hi, Will," he crooned. "My name is Mycroft. I'm your big brother."
    This news seemed less than welcome. The crystal blue eyes squinched up, and the baby cried, rapidly turning an alarming shade of red. "What's wrong?" Mycroft gasped.
    "Just hungry." Mummy scooped up the infant. Mycroft gasped in horror.
    "You've got to support his head, Mummy!" He knew that for a fact, babies' heads were so big that delicate neck could snap like a twig. Mummy nodded and smiled but she didn't seem anywhere near careful enough. Until baby William held up his own head at three months, Mycroft worried about a broken neck.

    “Re-evaluate,” Sherlock repeats, in a strangled sort of voice.

And John goes into this endless spluttering explanation about how Sherlock is a very complicated person and we just don’t know. We can’t be sure. And the next time they’re over at 221B Rosie looks up from Sherlock’s picture book about poisonous plants, gives Sherlock a look and asks, 'Are you gay, Sherlock?' and Sherlock, without missing a beat, just says 'Yes,' and continues drinking his tea, and Rosie says 'Ah,' and goes back to her plant book, and John nearly doubles over in the corner."
