The airport looks like it always does. A sea of people oblivious to anything going on around them. Ilya is about to put his headphones over his ears when he sees something so familiar his brain almost doesn't register it. That is until he realizes that he's in fucking Moscow so this doesn't make any sense.
Because right there at the gate, spread out over several chairs, his duffle bag as a pillow, is the figure of Shane Hollander sleeping. The hood of his sweatshirt is up and he's wearing sunglasses, but Ilya would recognize the shape of Shane Hollander anywhere.
“Hollander?” he asks in shock, stepping closer.
Or, Shane shows up in Russia after learning Ilya's father died. Ilya did not ask him to do this. He just showed up. And now Ilya doesn't know what to do with himself. He proceeds to just go with it, and maybe listen to Shane for once.

It still felt like a slap.
Shane must have let out a sound of some sort, because Ilya turned to look at him, finally.
“Did not mean it like that,” Ilya said. “Just… surprised.”
Shane shifted awkwardly from one foot to the next, as if he was suddenly coming to the realization that he had no right to be here at all. “I got a call from the hospital,” he explained. “They told me I’m your emergency contact.”
“Sorry,” Ilya said, in such a quiet voice it was almost impossible to hear him. “I forgot to change it.”
Shane could only frown. That did not make him any less confused. “I guess I just… I don’t understand why you put me down as your emergency contact in the first place. It’s not like we…”
Ilya took a couple of deep breaths. It looked like they were painful. His eyes slid away from Shane, like he couldn’t bear to look at him. “Did not have anyone else,” he admitted, and now his voice was the smallest Shane had ever heard it, like Ilya was trying to disappear as the words left him. “I’m sorry.”--

Might need a little bit of editing for the communication sections for it to be clear what the intention behind certain statements is (just a little. It is clear that the Author likes when not everything is explicitly stated and I like it about this fic) and who is speaking (common issue with the same pronouns for the participants of a conversation or when the exchanges are reported in direct language, with no accompanying descriptors to identify speakers) and perhaps just a little bit more "feeling" within Ilya's bedroom scene to convey the wealth of intimacy and breakthrough character of this encounter. For me - at times the feelings are not necessarily clearly defined, making this section more challenging to understand on the emotional plane. But perhaps it is just my autism showing, or the fault of my brain having to adjust because of other literature I recently read that had more explicitly written emotion..? I do appreciate the choice to use fewer more poignant words otherwise, where it allows what is left unsaid have center stage. I love to see it as it relies on the reader to be able to identify the between-the-lines parts. I will be back for more from this wonderful author and probably will re-read this one as well. I wonder if the opinion on the bedroom scene will change then.
