“I’m happy,” George whispers, the words slipping past his lips without permission.
“Huh?” Dream says. “What’s that, baby?”
Sapnap’s watching them. His eyes dart away when they meet George’s and he ducks under the water.
“I said, ‘’m happy’,” George mumbles, feeling slightly embarrassed at the honesty. He feels the need to layer over it with a joke but he can’t think of one.
“Yeah?” Dream says with an audible smile. And George only tucks his cheek further into Dream and reaches over to fiddle with his boyfriend's chain.

Getting old is scary. Love, even more so.
Dream is very aware of this fact.
Eighteen birthdays can't prepare him for the fact his lifelong best friend is about to walk through the Arrivals gate after twenty one birthdays of being overseas, nor does it prepare him for the reality that 4336 mi. can turn into 0 from just a single letter.

LA means something different to Dream these days.
It used to represent a lot of different things, his future, the finale, where all the big names were. He was told that if he could get himself there then he’d made it.
But now he’s here and he’s still going. Nothing feels like it’s stopped, or even slowed down, if anything it feels like it’s speeding up. Like he’s a snowball and on a hill plummeting down.

LA is supposed to be a break for George. A reset. He's sick of the monotony of his life back home in London. He misses his days from college with his friends, roaming the streets with little to no plan.
Coming back here is not just a family trip, but he wants it to reignite something in his life. Remind him that he's not just going to be stuck doing the same thing for the rest of his life.

For a moment Dream’s taken aback by the abrupt question. They have never exactly talked about it, unless you count Dream’s coming out; but even then, George didn’t ask about anything like that.
And, normally, he wouldn’t mind any questions about his sexuality, especially from his friends; he was more than glad to open up about his experience if that was meant to help them figure out some stuff about themselves.
But this, well this was a question he would rather not answer. Especially to George.

It feels like a challenge—a nod toward yes, this is a game and you’re playing right into it. George doesn’t like that one bit, nor does he want to play into anything. However, he also doesn’t want to lose. He’s not normally one for competitions or the like, but this entire thing is quite literally rigged against him and he’ll be damned if he’s to be humiliated by someone like this.
So, he plays along.
He plays along because he’s angry and frustrated and Sapnap knows something he doesn’t and Dream is hundreds, thousands of miles away from him all over again and he can’t handle being alone with himself for a single second longer.
Thus, George opts to obsess—maybe obsess is a bit much, but he considers it regardless—over the flowers and their sender.
Or, in the week leading up to George's birthday, he recieves bouquets of flowers from an anonymous source. The mystery behind it gets to him.
