It was not Yusuke’s bed that he awoke in.
“Oh.” The word was quiet, less of a spoken word and more of a breathed noise escaping involuntarily.
Approaching the bed, the man spoke soothingly to him, voice somewhat higher than Yusuke had expected and smooth as a gentle river. The man didn’t look at him, instead watching the tray to make sure he didn’t spill whatever was in the bowl on it as he placed it on the bedside table. A question laced his words once his hands were free, and he glanced at Yusuke, obviously awaiting an answer.
All Yusuke could do was stare back. He’d understood not a single word the man had spoken, though his speech had been clearly measured. The man frowned at him, a worried twist to his mouth, and spoke again, presumably repeating his question. It was slower than before, more carefully enunciated, and Yusuke had entirely no idea what he was asking.
