You don’t say anything else after that. His hands are cold and burning and you feel as if he is pulling your very skin back, checking your body for your blood and heart and veins. He pauses when he bites at your neck; traces the skin down until he has reached your chest. “You should have a freckle here,” he whispers, biting it again. “Shame. I liked all your freckles.”
Distantly, you wonder what else he has forgotten.

“You need sleep,” Soap says instead. He places a hand on Ghost’s shoulder. His movements around Ghost are always slow and deliberate as if he has charted out every action ahead of time as to not spook Ghost.
Some nights, it makes Ghost want to scream. Some nights, he wants to tell Johnny that he is not fragile; that he has survived things worse than he could ever imagine.
Other nights, like right now, it is the only thing that keeps Ghost from falling apart.

Ghost blinks. Soap watches as his long eyelashes grace the freckles on his cheek, and he can’t help but blush. Even here, in as simple a moment as going for a walk, Soap can’t help but be astounded by how far he has come; how far the both of them have come.
“It’s a fucking raccoon,” Ghost says. “It’s not adorable.”
Soap frowns. “I think he’s cute.”

And it is just that; just sleeping. Soap, spread starfish across the bed; Ghost, with his hand carding through Soap’s hair. He smiles softly as Soap moves in his sleep, turning closer to Ghost.
He’s not quite sure how they got here, but he knows it is worth it.

Summary
“You’re safe,” Ghost says. There is a gun in his pocket, and he wonders how many people have died from it. There is a knife wound in his side and he wonders if this will make up for all the blood on his hands that he never quite washed off.
Soap blinks. “We’re safe, Lt. The both of us.”
Ghost does not want to lie. He is old enough to stop pretending, even as it rips his own heart from his chest. Soap deserves better than the easy lies that leave his mouth; he deserves better than the shaky fragment of love that Ghost could try to give him.
The blood dripping down his side is searing in its honesty. This is it. He paid his last respects; did what he was meant to do. If only one of them can survive, he would rather it be Soap. Eventually, Soap will move on—maybe, if Ghost is lucky, he’ll keep a picture, a lasting memory of a Ghost that will stop haunting him after death. Soap will move on.
(Ghost wouldn’t.)

Summary
The man with the rifle traces it across the mask, from the bridge of Ghost’s nose to his cheekbones. “You’ve got a very…” he trails off, and glances at Soap. With a handgun trained at his sergeant’s back, Ghost doesn’t dare try to make a move. “A very loyal sergeant,” the man says, and the smile on his face is revolting in its joy.
Ghost cannot tear his eyes away from the blood on Soap’s shoulder. It wasn’t supposed to go like this. The blood is red and dripping and if they died, it was supposed to be quick. Painful, sure, but that was always part of the deal.
It wasn’t supposed to go like this, betrayal rotten in his mouth and a rifle pointed between his eyes. Ghost tenses his jaw, and stays quiet.
“I would hate for anything to happen to him,” the man whispers, and the rifle’s muzzle is still hot against his mask. Ghost wonders how many men were killed using it.
He glances at Soap again. Here, in the soft moonlight, he is beautiful, even with the blood dripping from his wound. In the end, it was never a decision for him to make.

Ghost learns at a very young age that he would have to be self-sufficient if he wanted to survive.
And that’s not a tragedy—at the very least, by the time he has reached thirty-three, he refuses to see it as such. He is an adult, and he has learned to deal with the way the world is. He has never received kindness nor pity from the place he grew up, and he is okay with that. Sometimes, that is simply how the world is. It is not an injustice. It is just a fact.
But back then he was six and terrified and he did not know the whole world. He knew only his father and mother and little brother; he knew only both the best and the worst. Sometimes, he thinks of what he would have been like had he not had his mother. Sometimes, he thinks that would have turned him into more of a monster than anything else could have.
He is six, and he is scared, and not for the last time in his life, he will have to fend for himself.

Summary
It’s a miracle August sees him in the first place.
August lifts a hand cautiously, in an awkward rendition of a wave. It’s been months since he has come across anyone that is not buried in a snowbank, eyes frozen open. August remembers trying to close all of them; trying to give the people who had lived here one last element of peace. It hadn’t worked, of course. The skin was too frozen and August was too gentle and in the end, that was the issue. August didn’t know when to stop being soft. Even in this frozen apocalypse, where there is no one left to pray for, August cannot stop himself from wanting to save everyone.
“Hello?” August calls out. He knows it is stupid. Most of those who have survived this long have not done so peacefully. It’s foolish to cry out, but August is tired of being alone, and he is tired of having no one to save.

“Gaz said he needed someone to go with him,” Soap says, and Ghost can feel his lips against his neck as he laughs. It makes him inhale sharply. This is something too—too much to be shared here, where anyone can see. This ought to be something that Ghost can take and box away into a little corner where he will never have to think about it again.
But in the end, it is Soap, and he is beautiful, and he deserves to be shown to the world. Ghost wraps a careful arm around him. It’s dark, anyhow; rain clouds are pushing on the horizon of the sky, drowning out the remaining light of the evening.
“Fireworks’ll probably start soon,” Soap whispers. With his hand around the back of Soap’s neck, Ghost can feel his pulse against his fingertips. It’s like some sort of salvation, here in the darkness of the fair. A moment just for the two of them.

“Adam,” Ronan says. Adam startles at the use of his first name, but he turns to look at Ronan. With the soft glow of moonlight reaching through the stained glass, Ronan’s eyes sparkle something softer than he would let himself appear in the daytime. “Just because I believe, doesn’t mean you need to.”
Adam blinks.
He thinks of the little six year old boy hiding away from a god-fearing man, and he thinks of the thirteen year old burning from the inside as he looks at another boy’s smile, and he thinks of himself, now, sitting here and cursing god for creating Adam in the first place.
“I don’t,” he says bluntly. “If there is a god, he’s not a gentle one.”
Ronan runs his thumb over the curve of Adam’s cheek. “Then don’t believe,” he says. “Make your own god.”
Adam laughs, Ronan’s soft words of blasphemy echoing throughout the stone cathedral walls.
Make your own god.
Adam looks at Ronan, beautifully alive in the darkness of the cathedral.
Maybe he will.
